Sun disappears around 3:30pm here also. Hate that it gets dark so early.
On the other hand, I try to stay out of the sun for obvious reasons. Rock and a hard place.

I use a cheapie full spectrum work light at my desk.
I have another for the sewing center.
When the dog needs "walkies", I get what natural light is available then.

Yes well I walk the dog too. Only the walk at lunch time has that dimly glowing orb near the top of the trees associated with it. Even the dog wears a coat and booties. I am a fully covered Canadian when out side.chunkyfrog wrote:I use a cheapie full spectrum work light at my desk.

I guess you mean just a regular old lamp? Are you thinking it works like a SADD lamp??chunkyfrog wrote:I use a cheapie full spectrum work light at my desk.

OK, so admittedly there may be an issue in Edmondton.BlackSpinner wrote:But it is -18c with snow and it doesn't rise until after 8 am and disappears around 3:30pm. I would suggest moving down to the the bright balmy South for a few weeks, say like moving in with Tetragon.

If you really have symptoms of SAD I wouldn't suggest a cheap wake up light. I would go for a real light box. They are very bright they will brighten up the whole room. There are directions as to how to use it and how it should be set up. You need to sit with in a certain distance and have it at a certain angle.
Also they make light visors. I have one and can't stand the thing. It shines the lights in your eyes.
Also you have to decide what is best. I think there are new technologies out there, that may include LEDS in stead of the traditional big light boxes. Also you have to decide on full spectrum or blue/green lights that my light visor has.
YOu can get full spectum light bulbs at a health food store for about 7 or 8 dollars that fit into a regular lamp. The bulb is slighty bigger than a regular bulb, but gives you that full spectum which is great for things like reading, or anything you want to see the full color of or doing fine work like sewing or things like that. Though I doubt these light bulbs are bright enough to treat SAD, they do give off a nice light and would recommend them just in general. They tend to last a long time time too.

Have you any idea how annoying the wet, Torontonian parkas are? Besides, our daystar is also broken. Sunrise at 7:44, sunset at 16:41. And while it does get painfully bright on clear days, we're just as covered as in Edmonton.deltadave wrote:OK, so admittedly there may be an issue in Edmondton.BlackSpinner wrote:But it is -18c with snow and it doesn't rise until after 8 am and disappears around 3:30pm. Yeah, well, it's too late now, we're all on our way. We'll be there at sunset (whenever that might be).tetragon wrote:Have you any idea how annoying the wet, Torontonian parkas are? BTW, what's for dinner? Moose? Do you guys have any like normal food up there?

Re: Might be an old topic... but...
My doc thought I had SADD a few years ago--never even considered OSA.
Apap took care of everything, but a nice light makes the day go better just the same--
--and it doesn't have to be a therapeutic "light box" An Ott light works fine for me,
and I bought a chintzy (Menards) full spec to use at work. (Someone broke a lamp on my desk a few years ago)
It belonged to the county, so no hard feelings, but the expensive stuff stays home!

Already?! But I was just going to grab a Rodfather and soda at Hey Meatball, not break out the moose and commandeer a firepit to cook it. I need more notice for that. Perhaps a churrasqueira run, instead?deltadave wrote:Yeah, well, it's too late now, we're all on our way. What, you are not firing up the BBQ at -15c in the blowing snow so they can stand around it and cook the peperoni and other sausages while holding a Blue in their mittens, eh? How un Canadian of you, it is a Christmas tradition!tetragon wrote:Already?! Re: Might be an old topic... but...
I don't have a barbecue or blowing snow, and it's +8 and rainy. No mittens or parkas, just my raincoat. I would need to go to a park and use one of their grills for sausages (or visit a hot dog cart), but I mislaid my hip-waders.BlackSpinner wrote:What, you are not firing up the BBQ at -15c in the blowing snow so they can stand around it and cook the peperoni and other sausages while holding a Blue in their mittens, eh? let there be light
I just picked up the set of lights. Blue therapy and wake up light

The Blu light is too bright for the camera.
Philips Hf3470 Wake-up Light
http://www.amazon.com/Philips-Hf3470-Wa ... B003XN4RIC
Philips goLITE BLU Light Therapy Device
http://www.amazon.com/Philips-goLITE-BL ... B001I45XL8
The wake up light is nice for sure. I have it set to play bird chirping while gradually turning on the light.
The BLU Light just arrived today so I don't really know if it works just yet. I'll use it when I wake up in the morning and I'll bring it with me to work since it has a built in battery.
Looks like light therapy does have some merit.
