Burning smell after taking mask off???

Yeah, our furnace is not on at all at night. So now the smell is back, although less than before. I am just using passover humidity so I know it is not the heating of the water (I could smell hot elements pre-cpap).
Kimberly, I think anything we put in our noses might add to it. I used to use a cream for nasal eczema and it had lavender in it. With the cpap, it was way too intense. I am only 2 weeks in, so am experimenting with a variety of things.
The smell does seem better, and I just rub my nose once I take the mask off and it mostly goes away.

bump!
OK, 4 weeks into restarting CPAP, this started happening to me today. It included some minor/mild blood. It seems to me like this is sinus irritation of some sort. Maybe due to dryness. It does go away after a bit. I am naturally VERY dry in the nasals anyways. I had the heat on 3. I think I'll kick it up to 4 and see if that helps.

Re: Burning smell after taking mask off???
I have had my Cpap for only a week now
And I have had the same thing happen to me everyday since I started using my cpap.
It smells like burning dust but I only smell it after I take off the mask.
I even disconnected the mask from the hose and just let the hose blow in my face and as soon as I move the hose away after about 2 min I smell burning Dust..
I wish someone here had a real answer of what is causing it.
I use a nasal pillow on 13 with humidifier from 0 to 5

Yes I get it too. As soon as I take my mask off and the machine stops there is a burning smell for a few mins.

I just did a quick search on nasal hallucinations, or phantosmia.
There was mention of smoky smell, along with possible causes.
A visit with a neurologist might be a good idea.

Since so many people smell the same thing its clear that its not in our head.chunkyfrog wrote:I just did a quick search on nasal hallucinations, or phantosmia.

Re: Burning smell after taking mask off???
It might be a natural phenomenon, like persistence of vision.
Maybe a compensation by the brain, like tinnitus.
Or images/voices of the recently dead when someone is mourning.
Certainly not imaginary, nothing crazy; the brain is totally amazing.
And we only understand very little about it.

Re: Burning smell after taking mask off???
After I started taking allergy shots and my nose cleared up, I would find I'd smell burning oil every time I stopped my car at a red light. I thought I had car trouble until I finally realized I was smelling the oil buildup where people stopped at red lights. Once I started smelling more normally again, I noticed a lot of smells I never noticed before.
Maybe your nose is clearing out with the CPAP and you're just smelling some low level smell you never noticed before.

I have also noticed a smell. However after thinking about it; I noticed I had used all the water up. I assume the machine is still heating but without water causes a smell.

Many of us notice a smell if the tank runs out of water. With mine, it's bad enough, it will usually wake me up.Guest wrote:I have also noticed a smell. However after thinking about it; I noticed I had used all the water up. I assume the machine is still heating but without water causes a smell.

However, I smell it before I take the mask off.

Re: Burning smell
Air Purifiers do put out a little ozone which can be smelled.Snoredog wrote:I just got a new BlueAir 402 HEPA filter the other day for the bedroom to replace a non-working Sharper Image Ionic Breeze Quadra, mainly for dust removal as I don't smoke.
After it was on only a couple hours I was surprised to smell a unique odor coming from the air purifier. I would have thought a air purifier would have removed odors not add them. I'm sure it is just the glue used in the manufacture of the certified HEPA filter creating the odor and it will soon go away.
Your Owner's Manual should mention this.

Re: Burning smell after taking mask off???
New CPAP user here of 3 days.
Take the nasal mask off after having it on for a long time, and instantly smell "burning dust" for a few seconds...
Kinda like the smell of a portable heater turned on after it's been sitting somewhere for a while unused.
Dust *inside* a machine that has been sitting somewhere?
Dust settled into distilled water that has sat on a shelf awhile?
I can't drink "drinking water" that grocery stores sell in the same kind of plastic jug as the distilled water - they always have an odd taste. Maybe this is the "odd taste" concentrated by the machine?
New Resmed Airsense, presumably new mask/Dreamwear ...
?

Re: Burning smell after taking mask off???
You, or your pillow smells. You're used to the smells in the air at a distance, that's being piped to you by your cpap, and when you take it off, you're smelling the smells in the air right next to your nose.chip mcdonald wrote: ↑Sun Sep 02, 2018 1:24 amNew CPAP user here of 3 days.

Re: Burning smell after taking mask off???
While I'd agree with that in many instances, in this case I think necro bumping an old thread on the exact topic seems appropriate. It shows people new to the topic the context and earlier answers, thus streamlining the replies. No need to create an entirely new thread for an existing topic, no more than one should start a new cushion trading thread every time someone wants to trade a cushion.
