HOw Can I Sell my CPAP?
HOw Can I Sell my CPAP?
I have a CPAP that was prescribed for me, but at 40, I can't imagine using one of these for the rest of my life.
According to the issuing clinic, it is a good machine with the "higher end" nasal mask. The main unit is from Fisher & Paykel and the manual indicates it is the HC230 model.
Is there a way I can sell this device? I checked out eBay and there's lots of CPAP peripherals, but no actual devices for sale which makes me wonder if I can legally sell it.
I'll gladly donate it if possible.
Thanks,
CharlieO

here's the deal--it's not illegal to sell it on ebay, only to sell it without ebay's qualifier that's somewhere in their seller's verbiage that if a prescription is required for the item, that you will ask to see the buyer's presciption. you should put that in your listing if you go the ebay route. the other way is just not to include the word CPAP in the description--either eliminate it altogether or write c-pap or somesuch. CPAP seems to be the nuke trigger but it seems, and i haven't watched ebay for a while, that ebay leaves alone those who use the qualifier. i just don't get why sellers don't get the message.
Re: HOw Can I Sell my CPAP?
If you fall asleep at the wheel of your vehicle and kill or maim others, SOMEBODY is going to wish you had been using your CPAP!!! I sincerely hope that you are not using the same roads that I use.....or my family or any of the dedicated XPAP users here on this forum.Charlieo wrote:I have a CPAP that was prescribed for me, but at 40, I can't imagine using one of these for the rest of my life.

Why would you chose to poenttially shorten your life when you are only 40? High blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, death - all the things that can happen without using your CPAP. A 28 year old co-worker of mine recenlty died from sleep apnea - tall and skinny - but had sleep apnea that was not treated - newly married too. I am 31 and I look forward to the rest of my life with CPAP. I NEVER want to go back to what I was without treatment. I don't know how my family, friends, and my fiance stood me. I was a lousy person. I am sure they wanted to kill me.
Wht risk it?
Wht risk it?
When I think about using cpap for the REST OF MY LIFE I remind myself that it is likely that other therapies will be invented. CPAP has not been around for my entire lifetime, and something else MAY replace it eventually, possibly (or maybe even probably) during my own lifetime. This keeps my fear of FOREVER from becoming overwhelming....

Charlieo, I am 58 years old, and I started cpap about 3months ago. I just can't picture sleeping WITHOUT it for the rest of my life.......You see, I'm not that tired of living that I would willingly shorten my life by not using it. Nor would I willingly choose to shorten someone else's life by falling aseep at the wheel......Think about it........and maybe some of us here can help you adapt......
Re: Sell/donate CPAP
I just got a prescription for CPAP and I would be glad if you would donate it to me!
New to this board and don't know what the protocol is for things like this.

Re: Sell/donate CPAP
I am also new to this board. I have a beautiful new device that was incorrectly prescribed. Would you be interested? 714-500-3535[quote="rj123456"]I just got a prescription for CPAP and I would be glad if you would donate it to me!

ebay
I agree with Guest above that the ebay auction still gets canceled even if you don't include "CPAP".
I have been watching Ebay for a number of weeks now and there doesn't seem to be much reason for what listings they cancel quickly and which ones go for a while or even to the end. I have seen some humidifier only auctions go to the end and some get canceled, and you don't need a prescription for those.
I learned this as a buyer. You immediately "ask a question" when you see a listing you like and include your personal email address in the note. Expect the auction to be canceled. Then the person selling can contact you if you want to buy. I bought a nice Remstar Pro from someone this way while I continue to fight the Insurance company for my auto. I programmed it to my sleep study settings (13) and have been using it with great success for the past 2 weeks. I will buy my auto from CPAP.com when I exhaust my insurance options, and keep the Pro or a travel/backup machine.
If I were a seller and I wanted to try to sell my machine, I would list it at the time of day that I thought the most people would look at it, expecting it to be canceled soon. Maybe even get a free email account (to avoid spam) and put that email address in the body of the listing for "questions". I heard from one seller that he got a 3 day penalty (couldn't list an item for 3 days) after his auction was canceled. Big deal if you are an occasional seller and only want to sell one item.
I have seen some listings with the disclaimer referred to above (prescription required...) last longer and then get canceled too. I have also been amused by the "empty carrying case auction, that used to hold a Remstar..." Those got canceled too. Every indication is that if you contact the seller on the side, the bag will contain a "free gift" worth more than the bag. Kind of like the plain envelope auctions for airline vouchers that are transferable but are void if "sold".
The downside of the ebay auction is a lot of sellers bought the machines through their local DME's and think the machine is worth FAR MORE than it retails for new. Since I have a prescription, I don't want to pay more than I would spend buying from Cpap.com, in fact I want to pay a bit less since the machine IS used and there is no warrenty and some risk... But, there may be some people willing to pay more for a used machine than they would new if they don't have a prescription. Maybe those people who think their Remstar Plus with CFLEX and Heated Humidifiers are worth $1400 aren't crazy if they manage to find the right person with no prescription.

Charlieo,
I've been using C-PAP for a couple of months. At first, I couldn't imagine using this for life (though I believe that something else will come up). Then within a couple of days I saw the improvement in my sleep - and I was actually awake the whole day! I take the warnings of what untreated sleep apnea can lead to very seriously.
I would tend to believe that you could sell or give your machine somehow, but the absolute improvement in the quality of LIFE should convince you to keep it up.
Regards,
RobbieG
