nose bleed with full face mask

Post by DougalMcDougal » Mon Nov 26, 2012 2:35 pm

i woke up with a nose bleed today - both nostrils - after using a full face mask for over a week

is this a recognised issue and if so why does it happen?

i can understand getting a nosebleed with nasal pillows but was surprised it happened with a full face mask

I'm thinking that the membrane inside your nose is more sensitive to the air pressure. It's like some folks can touch their nose and start a nose bleed. I would wait a few days to see if it really is an issue or a one time-thing. If the air coming in your mask is in-line with your nose, you may want to try a mask that doesn't.

Have you ever had a nose bleed, if so how many and how often. XPAP doesn't cause nose bleeds, but if you have them from your treatment only something is wrong and needs to be checked out for REAL. Jim

The air movment could dry out your nose causing cracking and bleeding, but i've never had that problem, in fact I no longer use a HH at all.

If anything, I am convinced that my nasal lining is in BETTER condition because of heated humidification.
You may need to find your correct level--For me, it would be to turn the humidifier up--for DH, off completely.

Have you tried increasing your humidity?

Neti-Pot. This simple device can help your nasal passages maintain the moisture. The saline will help with inflamation. Just use only boiled water.

I use the Hybrid with has nasal pillows, and for the first time in 5-1/2 years on cpap I am having trouble with nosebleeds that happen during the day. I don't believe cpap is the CAUSE, but I do believe it's a contributing factor. My family doctor agrees. He has me using Vaseline, saline nasal spray, and the saline gel. I've also increased the humidity on my cpap. Doc said the number one thing was to increase the moisture any way possible. Things have improved a lot in the last week since I started all this, as I have no actual nosebleeds as long as I don't blow my nose hard, but my septum in both nostrils is still really red. (I can't use a Neti pot because every time I do I end up with ear pain, which is mentioned as a possible side effect in the instructions that came with mine.

Way up north here it is common in the winter when our house end up drier then the Gobi desert. Move your head too fast and there is a red shower. This is why you need a humidifier. Another reason is dried out sinuses/nasal passages swell and crack, letting in bacteria.

If it doesn't happen again, good.
If it happens frequently, you might consider having someone take a look at it.
I worked with a guy who'd lost his nose to cancer.
He had the oddest looking prosthetic.

Hi DougalMcDougal!

Some say that a full face mask tends to press the lower jaw back - which - may decrease the space in the upper airway - which - would possibley cause sleep apnea to occure at a lower pressure.

If this did occure it would activate the central nervous system more, which may cause you to breath more, which would dry out your nasal passages as well as wash out CO2 thus reducing circulation and metobolism in the the upper airway - which would both irritate it and make it vulnerable to infection or other disease.

I have never tried a full face mask and after hearing about the jaw thing (which makes sense to me) I likely never will.

Have a great week!

If as you say, (Without even using a FF Mask), happens it would be because it's incorrectly put on and overtightened. Jim

if you are using the climate line hose, you can indeed adjust either the temperature or the humidity level. Your system is probably set for auto...

you need to go into the S9 system and turn the controls into manual for the climate line hose. After that, you can adjust either.

one word of caution is to start slow in your adjustments to avoid rain-out.

I woke up with a nose bleed today. It's my second one since starting APAP 4 months ago. It's not bad, but it's scary for me. I am using the Quattro FX FFM, and I don't use my humidifier.

The climate line tubing maintains humidity at 80%. Go to manual and you can control both humidity and temerature.
