my s9 vpap S came with a slimline unheated hose
Is it worth buying the climateline heated hose? It costs about $50. Does it really improve comfort or the treatment - my system one apap machine came with a heated hose and I can't notice much difference

Re: my s9 vpap S came with a slimline unheated hose
Well... the climateline serves two purposes. It helps prevent rainout and (Resmed says) it warms the air.... a little. If it was me, I would see if rainout is an issue or not. I have always been skeptical about the warming of the air. Since the humidifier heats the water up to vapor (steam), the air pushes the vapor thru a hose. I wonder if the air spends enough time in the hose to allow the heated hose to transfer heat or not. Some folks can detect it. When I use my humidifier, I sense the air is heated, but I have always assumed it's from the humidifier and not the hose. I would see if you need it.

thanks for the advice sheriff, I've bought all kinds of junk hoping it would improve the experience - padacheeks, liners, cleaners, cpap pillow, hose wrap, hose holder, numerous masks, etc etc - and almost all of it sits in a box in the attic collecting dust. It either did nothing or made it worse

Re: my s9 vpap S came with a slimline unheated hose
You may not need the heated hose. For many, many years none of us had heated hoses. The S9 was the first model to offer heated hose option. Some people needed only a hose cozy to prevent rain out. Some people needed nothing...had no rain out issues.
It all depends on your own humidity preference and your preferred bedroom temperature in the winter.
Rain out or temperature problems rarely happen in the summer..mainly a winter issue.
I prefer lots of added moisture and a really cold bedroom...so rain out is bound to happen and heated hose is a definite plus for me. Past winters when the only heated hose was the stand alone Aussies heated hose ($150 back then) I opted for hose cozy. Helped a lot but not totally for my needs but others that is all that is needed.
So just wait till you see if you need any help with rain out or temperature issues. You may not even have a problem.

dear pugsy, so far if anything the air feels too hot and humid, I also like to keep my bedroom really cold in the winter - often used to sleep in an unheated porch in the winter in my winter sleeping bag - no idea how my ahi would have been last night since i was unable to nod off for even a second of sleep - no idea why, i felt quite comfortable

Re: my s9 vpap S came with a slimline unheated hose
I moved to the heated climate line hose because our heat turns down to 60 degrees F at night... My lungs felt like they were getting cold air while the rest of my body was warm under the covers.
It was a weird feeling... my lungs & nostrils were cold, but the rest of me was warm.
The minor additional heat provided by the heated hose has eliminated that feeling.

According to the Respironics rep I spoke to the other day,
System One machines are designed to eliminate rainout; with a regular hose,
and the heated hose was merely added to match what Resmed's ante.

Tis true but I can state from personal experience that with the System One humidification system at max setting of 5 does not prevent ice cube nose at my house and that is even with a Padacheek top of the line hose cozy.chunkyfrog wrote:System One machines are designed to eliminate rainout; with a regular hose,
That's why I bought the Hybernite last winter.
It does prevent rain out but there is simply not enough added heat to keep the air warm enough for me in my rather cool bedroom.
Even with the hose cozy the cold air woke me up and was extremely uncomfortable and affected the quality of my sleep.

Re: my s9 vpap S came with a slimline unheated hose
A few weeks ago with cooler weather in the northeast, the temperature in my bedroom went down to 65 or so and the air coming through my unheated hose (I was using my PRS1 Bipap) felt significantly cooler on my nose, unpleasantly so. I switched to my S9 with ClimateLine and the air felt noticeably warmer.
It's a matter of comfort and personal preference.

Re: my s9 vpap S came with a slimline unheated hose
Turn the humidification to wherever feels good to you. If you get water condensing in the hose, consider getting a heated hose. If you don't get rainout, I think there's no need for the heated hose.
However, does the S9 heated hose have some sort of temperature/humidity sensor at the mask end of the hose? If so, it may give you better regulated air temperature and humidity at the mask.

Yes, there is a temperature sensor at the mask end of the ClimateLine hose.archangle wrote: However, does the S9 heated hose have some sort of temperature/humidity sensor at the mask end of the hose? If so, it may give you better regulated air temperature and humidity at the mask.

Pugsy:
Not surprising.
I asked the guy if he used cpap himself: "No".
