Chipmunk cheeks and mouth leak, begone!!

Post by grillhead » Tue Nov 13, 2012 11:54 am

After battling with chipmunk cheeks and mouth leaks, I finally have a solution that works! I love, love, love my Mirage FX nasal mask, but couldn't stop having the puffy cheeks and mouth leaks. My tongue would always relax, cheeks puff, and eventually blow out my lips. Here's what that ended up like:

Image

If you look you can see the gap in my lips, and that drove me nuts! So I tried mouth taping which worked to a degree, but was kind of uncomfortable and was REALLY uncomfortable pulling off of the facial hair! I tried a chinstrap but that didn't help either unless I taped, because the air would still force it's way through my lips. I tried Poligrip strips which didn't work at all, tasted terrible, and was worse trying to get all the sticky off. I looked at other solutions including different chinstraps and saw this one:

This looked familiar to me so I did some checking and sure enough, I found what it reminded me of. Wal-mart carries a Mueller elastic bandage with Velcro which is exactly like that chinstrap except it's tan and doesn't have the backstrap. It also costs less than 5 bucks. I picked it up to give it a try. In the meantime, I also tried an Amara FFM just to see what it would do. It's a good mask, but just not for me. So, after the Amara, the Mirage Quattro FFM, crappy chinstrap, tape, and strips, this is what I came up with:

I love it! I absolutely love it! It is surprisingly comfortable. It doesn't bother my head, nose, ears, or anything! I don't wrap it tightly at all. There is just enough tension between it and my lips that even if my tongue AND jaw relaxes, the lips still won't part. However, if I feel the need to take a deep breath with my mouth I can. Trust me, I tested and tested it. I believe this is a 100% safe way of keeping chipmunk cheeks at bay. With this plus that mask, even though I've only used CPAP for going on three weeks now, I can sleep a full night without taking off the mask, and don't even notice that I'm wearing anything. Oh, and the mask makes a great seal over the bandage as well. No leaks!! This works great for me and hopefully it will work for many others as well!

One last thing. My son thinks I look like a ninja LOL

I guess I'm sorta claustrophobic of sorts. If I wore that... I know I would wake up one night and rip that stuff from my face so fast, I'd have it off in a second and a half! Oh well... to each his own! I'm glad you found what works for you. I am amazed on how folks can "think up" contraptions that actually work!!

The material that strap is made out of is breathable, so I can even talk in it when I have it on when I need to (which is alot different than when I taped it shut LOL). You gotta do what you gotta do to get a good nights sleep!

What really surprises me is how little tension it takes to keep the cheeks from puffing out. My machine pressure is 12 and if I open my mouth it sounds like a hurricane, but the strap keeps 'em nice and flat

grillhead, this might be tough for you to answer what with the facial hair, but does this leave marks on your face? It looks like it would leave quite a few horizontal lines across the face. I used to use a self-adhering ace type of bandage across my face like you are doing, but it left awful marks on my face.

Also, how adjustable is the velcro? Would it fit a face/neck that's smaller?

If you can link to the actual product on Walmart's site, I'd appreciate it!

The first night it left some lines that disappeared in about 15 minutes, but I had it tighter that night. Last night I left it looser and there weren't any lines when I got up. It is adjustable the entire length of it, so you can make it as small or as large as you like. You can even cut off some of the length if it's too long, or you could even split it if it is too wide. Hmm, it does look like that chinstrap, which I have, and that one left marks on my face. Well, I guess it's worth $4 to find out. Thanks!

I use the fitlife total face mask. Sometimes I get small leaks at the very edge of my lips and cheeks. So what I do is I let my mouth fill with air, which puffs out my cheeks, and offers a seal at that spot. I do that a lot at night and now I wonder if I do that all night. Because I am a very heavy mouth breather, I cannot use a nasal mask, so the mask I have allows me to mouth-breath and still receive successful therapy. Out of curiosity, why are you concerned about the puffy cheeks?

Puffy cheeks usually precede flappy lips.

Prevents me from falling asleep when I'm dozing, and wakes me with very dry mouth. In short, it's disruptive.

The puffy cheeks makes my jaw hurt, and the noise keeps me awake. Plus I want the max therapy from my mask and machine. This method eliminates dry mouth as well.

I just left my DME from dropping off the Amara. I showed the RT my strap method. She seemed impressed

This should be located around the pharmaceuticals and first aid, blood pressure monitors, ect... section, correct? Hrmmm, Don't know if I like how constrictive it looks around the face but might be worth a shot to try.

Correct. It's in the first-aid section. It's not as constrictive as you think... I can talk and breathe through it if I really want to. If worse comes to worst, you can always return it
