Chin strap woes. PapCap questions.

Post by VikingGnome » Sun Nov 11, 2012 10:24 am

I gave up on FF mask. So back to nasal mask with chin strap and sometimes mouth taping. I've been using the "Premium" Respironics chin strap that is quite wide and has chin "pocket". It adjusts with velcro at top of head and has a back strap with velcro that's supposed to keep it in position. I have very long hair and I wake up in the morning with my hair all tangled in the velcro. Sometimes the chin pocket slips off my vaguely defined chin and is down under my lower jaw. This morning I woke up with my chin strap serving as a GAG (as in bind and gag). Enough of that chin strap.

What about PapCap? Can I wear it over my long hair? My hair is very fine and straight (no poofiness). Pictures show the strap under the lower jaw and not at the chin.

All suggestions for chin straps welcomed.

I find the PapCap and my modified Sullivan the only chin straps I can stand wearing.
The PapCap is bulky on the top, and sometimes scoots forward.
If you can get it to stop that, it is not too bad.
Mostly, I use tape, yes, TAPE
(Yes, I shouted; all the better to freak out Archangle--love to yank his leash)

This is my favorite chin strap....(link below). I have tried a lot of them including the one you spoke about....I have a new Ruby chin strap that I won't wear because even though it is simlar to my favorite.... because it is itchy...thats how picky I am.
Best of luck in finding one that will work for you!

By the way I also use TAPE!!

Another chin strap alternative, which I have done--quite successfully:
Take a biker's bandanna cap, add Velcro to the sides and a flannel chin strap.
Anchoring it in back to my hair appears to be the best way to keep it from creeping onto my eyebrows.

I' ve been using my old foam neck brace. I have a SleepWeaver Advanced cloth "pink nose". After the headpiece is adjusted, I carefully put the neck brace around and secure it. It keeps my mouth shut; and because I also use an Orapatch, my mouth stays moist. I am going to cut some of the foam from the brace until it gets shaped more comfortably but first I wanted to see if it would work.

My hair is very short but it still gets wound up with velcro. Has any one tried a cotton cap before the headgear? or maybe what's used under a wig? Maybe I should try to design a cap/ chin holder or maybe one already exists? Next week's\project.

I'm just beginning my chin strap journey. Until I found this forum, I didn't know I was mouth breathing. Pugsy & some others helped me interpret my data as 'mouth breathing at its finest'. I've ordered a chin strap & have been experimenting with masks (they are all the same - my data say I am a mouth breather). I also have very long hair, so I feel your pain regarding the velcro. I'm sure when my strap gets here, I'm sure I'll have the same compaint as you. I've already had the problem of velcro on the mask tangling with my hair. I've learned with the mask velcro to close & adjust it to fit correctly while on, then pull it off, then put back on - this keeps hair from being pulled daily, you only pull it once while setting the right size. I have no knowledge of the PapCap, but it seems like it would shift over the hair and have tangles in the am - buy maybe I'm wrong. My mottos is if you think it might work, try it. I've tried many weird things getting masks adjusted, so I'm sure I will do the same trying to stop this mouth breathing while learing to wear a chin strap or tape.
Good luck & let me know how the hair works out for you,
Jen

Funny you should say that. I thought about a chin strap "mod" myself. I can't stand all the bulk from the layers of straps between the headgear and chin strap. I actually abandoned the chin strap due to discomfort. I wondered if there would be some way to attach the chin strap to the swift fx headgear but I think it would pull the pillows out. Then I thought of a kind of sling type chin strap made of cloth with cloth straps that go up to the crown area to another sling type (seamed) "cap" where the seam would run across the crown area and integrating the straps for the pillows.

I'd think a cotton cap would slide around from the headgear strap ?

Chunkyfrog, what makes it bulky on top?

This headcap:

and this chinstrap:

Topaz Adjustable Chin Strap

See them here:

http://www.cpapstation.com/catalog/chin ... _caps.shtm

Go nicely with your mask!

No leaks, and no hair entanglement.

I used the chinstrap with a mask similar to your Activa with my S9 Elite and now with my S9 Autoset.
I can post here my last 6 months Stats which you'll find envious.

I found a mask, the Optilife Nasal Pillow and Cradle Cushion, which incorporates either nasal pillows or nasal mask. I've ordered this and waiting for it to arrive, along with a chinstrap to try with existing masks. Not sure if this works, but maybe someone else here has tried this mask?

If i were getting any relief with the cpap, I'd probably be more inclined to get inventive with the gear.
For now I'm happy with the Swift FX pillows sans chin strap.

I bought an Optilife this weekend from another CPAP patient, but I haven't tried it overnight yet. The chinstrap seems designed for holding the mask in place; it doesn't do much for holding my mouth closed. The mask stayed securely in place without any leak problems when I tested it during the day.

Have you been able to use a chinstrap with your Sleepweaver elan? I bought one recently to use as a travel mask, but I was unable to control the leaks if I wear it with a Puresom Ruby chinstrap. The mask has otherwise been working very well for me.

Haven't got my chinstrap yet, ordered as soon as my data showed mouth breathing, should get this week. I will try with Elan, as well as Piliaro which is my favorite mask. I was hoping the Optilife would work, but doesn't sound good. If Optilife doesn't work, I can send it back to DME. I will concentrate on the chinstrap & probably have to try taping, but someone here said taping & seizures don't work well together. Let me know how the Optilife works for you.
