Common to be depressed after a couple of weeks?
Hi all
Newbie here of course.
I posted a couple of weeks ago about how I was really trying to deal with my sleep apnea and CPAP and my daytime symptoms (moodiness, afternoon torpor, etc) was getting better, but not miraculously. I would still be find with that, but the past 5 days it just seemed to get worse by leaps and bounds. No interest in anything (even stuff I normally love like walking the dog, watching TV, reading) and I just seem to have no energy.
Is this typical, something like "catching up on sleep" (which I thought was a myth until I read it in here) or something else?
I haven't figured out how to read my SD card yet as I don't have a slot I can find on my computer and have not been to the place that gave me my machine yet so they can read it (I think that will be after 6 weeks on the CPAP, which is another couple of weeks).
I guess I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this happen.
Thanks in advance for answers.
Barb

To read your data, you may need an SD card reader like this: http://www.frys.com/product/7056421?sit ... IN_RSLT_PG
That's what I got to plug the USB side into my computer.
Sorry, I'm newer than you to respond to the other aspects of your post.

Re: Common to be depressed after a couple of weeks?
You have data available on the machine's LCD screen. Were you aware of that?
Not as comprehensive as the software reports but you have some data.
SleepQuality in the clinical setup has to be turned on to "patient".
Do you have the clinical manual that tells you all about how to get to the clinical menu and what you will see in there?
Here's a pdf of it if you don't have it.
http://www.apneuvereniging.nl/forum/pdf ... manual.pdf
I don't know that I can comment about the moodiness or feelings of depression. I really didn't have those symptoms before or after cpap diagnosis and starting treatment.
It probably would be a good idea to check your data to make sure that things are in good shape there. Just to make sure that something isn't lacking there which might account for some of your symptoms.

I can't see why you would be more depressed, by seeing your health improve.
only if you don't make xpap work for you, can I see a downside, you get what your are willing to put into everything in life. Try is nice, but only Succeed makes you a winner. Jim

Use data to optimize your xPAP treatment!

Okay will try suggestions.
I could find some things on the LED (CD?) screen, but didnt find them helpful. Perhaps the manual will help- I will look at that right now.
Thanks for all the helpful replies!
Barb
PS I am doing what I can to get used to this new life- I know " trying" is a naughty word these days....

Re: Common to be depressed after a couple of weeks?
Quite a few people report tiredness. The term "sleep debt" is often used.
I often think of it as if stopping apnea is like stopping drinking, smoking, drugs, etc. You body got used to sleep disturbance, low O2, panic hormones from being strangled, etc. It made adjustments. When you stop getting strangled every few minutes during the night, your body is sort of out of balance until it readjusts.
I don't know if there's any scientific truth to that, but it sort of makes sense of what a lot of people report.
There is also the possibility there's something wrong with your treatment, so reading the data is a good thing.
Also, just because you're an apneac on CPAP, don't forget you can still get all the medical problems non-apneacs get.

Re: Common to be depressed after a couple of weeks?
I experienced a sort of 'crash' a few weeks in. It passed in a few days.
I still don't know if it was a withdrawal effect from my stress hormones or a seasonal thing.
(too old for the hormone stuff)

Re: Common to be depressed after a couple of weeks?
I'm right there with ya Snorkasaurus. I have a lassitude on CPAP of the likes I have never experienced before. I never was a couch potato and now I am! That is very depressing. It's like I'm drugged, an entirely different type of tired. Then if I stop the CPAP for a couple of days I have more get up and go.
It makes me feel like I'm stuck halfway between sleep and awake. Possibly I sleep deeper with CPAP which makes it harder to get completely out of that certain brain wave state during waking hours? Who knows but I certainly is affecting my life and I wish I knew more about what is happening to me.
It's hard to just try the old "keep at it and soon you will repay your sleep debt" when you have to show up at work and actually perform and you've been like this for months. I honestly don't know what's worse, CPAP or no CPAP.

I wouldn't say you WILL "repay your sleep debt," but a lot of people do. If it doesn't work for you eventually, you may need to study the issues further.opticalpopsicle wrote:It's hard to just try the old "keep at it and soon you will repay your sleep debt" when you have to show up at work and actually perform and you've been like this for months. Re: Common to be depressed after a couple of weeks?
I guess I'm one of the 'lucky' ones.
My sleep was so horribly interrupted, pre-CPAP, that I was getting practically NO sleep at all;
Afterward--OMG__It was like I was given a GIFT!
I was totally 'locked in', the lousy mask fit didn't really matter--I could actually SLEEP!

Re: Common to be depressed after a couple of weeks?
I have been using the CPAP for about a month now and I am having the same reaction. I have no energy, I feel worse than before cPap, and I am depressed. I have Central Apnea (stop breathing when asleep) with no obstruction. I wonder if treatment should be different with central apnea. I am miserable but afraid to give up. Any suggestions or insight from more experienced users?

Griffin: Please register/fill in your equipment.
Some equipment is directed toward treating central apnea, and some isn't.
A few insurance companies will force you to use the wrong kind before they will even consider
the machine that will address the problem. The system is broken. Help us get around it.
