longer hose and potential issues

Post by justacpapuser » Tue Oct 23, 2012 7:13 am

A few weeks ago I started using a longer hose for my CPAP machine. 8' instead of 6'.
I did so because instead of bringing my CPAP device each time out of the closet I just leave it on the nightstand which is further away.
I noticed that my mouth started to become drier even though I put the humidity on max (setting 5 I believe).
I think this is because the hose is longer its tougher for humidity to get to me.

Has anyone else experienced this (or am I imagining my mouth becoming drier)?
Are there any other potential issues with a 8' hose as opposed to the "standard" 6'?

Unless you are having rainout the humidity is getting to you. The moisture must go somewhere either it condenses in the hose or you breathe it.

I wouldn't expect much difference.

If you had a leak in the hose, it would lower the humidity.

Well, technically it would lower the air pressure/volume delivered to mask but the humidity would remain the same.

This is what I am afraid of. It is not that the hose is 20' but the "standard" hose is 6'.
I'll try switching to 6' and see if there is a difference. May have to reposition my CPAP though.

We like to keep our room cool at night because we sleep better. I noticed lastnight that I had some dripping in my mask, and I also had condensation inside the tube. This is the reason I am trying to get the heated tube set. My DME is being quite putzy though. They are going to recieve a call from me today. I do not think they are used to dealing with an educated client to be honest.

I added 8 more feet. I also have oxygen added in. I have seen no change in pressure at all . works like a charm. with the short span you use the pressure should the same. these units us a hvlp pump, so pressure is not a biggie. the pump will make the same volume no matter the lengh of the hose( unless it is really long)

Until you can get your DME educated you can make a homemade hose cozy that will help reduce the condensation.
Some old tube socks..cut off the toes and slide them over the hose..may take several..thicker the better...secure with rubber bands to keep them from sliding around if they tend to slide.

You can experiment if you like but I don't think that reduction in pressure with the addition of 2 ft is going to be enough to matter.
If it were then we would have warnings all over the place when we buy 8 ft hose. Seems like we can even buy 10 foot hoses.

I guess I wasn't clear, the minimally longer hose will not reduce air flow or pressure but a leaky hose will. A leaky hose however will not affect the humidity of the air being delivered.
