Do I Really Need To Replace Headgear On Swift FX?

Post by fredmertz » Sun Sep 23, 2012 10:18 am

I am 4-months plus into Swift FX and I just ordered a replacement through my insurance.

I'm wondering if it is necessary to replace the headgear rather than just keep replacing the pillows.

The headgear is so minimal -- other than maybe the cheek pads getting a little frayed, it seems exactly as new.

The mask cost $26 with coverage, so not a huge expense, but the replacement pillows cost me about $5.

I would appreciate any thoughts.

Fred,

I am 4 months into my "life on CPAP". I too have the swift FX. I have had to replace the pillows twice so far (the first set, I cleaned with baby wipes with aloe and they failed (one inner silicon cylinder became inverted). This caused an awful leak. I replaced the next pillow a week or so ago (after 2 months) when I noticed my leak rate was climbing. I will let these rest and try them again to see if that helps.

As for headgear, my insurance company replaces them every 6 months (actually will replace the entire mask). Frankly, my headgear looks fine, no wear or tear that I can see. Freaky thing is that when I got my 3 month resupply I got 3 pillows and three nozzel, short hose and pillow sets too. Not sure why....but I got parts

I am almost 10 months into my current headgear. Back strap looks a bit ugly but really hasn't changed any. The whole mask set up package comes with an extra back strap though so that part is easily changed out.
The silicone part of the headgear as well as the short hose assembly pretty much can't be hurt with normal use and care.
It discolors a bit with age but I have never had anything break within those silicone parts.
I do keep a new spare just in case though. Never know what might happen...dog or whatever.

My current Swift FX headgear is six months old and I rather like the way it adjusts so easily now, plus it just feels more comfortable on my face. The straps even seem softer from usage. I noticed the same thing with my 22mm hoses which were quite stiff when new... after several months they get more flexible and very pliable (not sure that's the right word). It'll be interesting to hear other people's opinions on this.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

I'm back to using my old Climateline hose--the new one is so horribly stiff.
Back to the FX headgear, I bought a spare,
but the silicone straps boil-renew just as nicely as the pillows.
