lips blow open

Post by chuchmeister » Sun Sep 16, 2012 8:26 pm

I'm using a Resmed Quattro FX full face mask and am still having problems. I tried a mask liner from padacheek like nanwilson suggested. It works for awhile, then the leaks start coming. I'm using a size medium and the liner seems to make the mask too small. Did anyone that is using a mask liner have to go to a larger mask size? Pleasae HELP. I haven't had a good night's sleep in months.

All I can tell you is that I was originally measured as a Large for the Quattro and , in fact, the Medium is perfect for me. When I tried the Quattro FX in a Medium...it was too small.....I don't know how this relates to lips. With a FF mask, it doesn't matter if your lips open.

Possible jaw drop issue like I am having. Where are the leaks? Top or btm?

If your jaw is going back and open when you relax, the btm may open up and leak.

Check out the Hans Rudolph V2 FF mask or the Respironics FullLife FF. They may help control jaw drop/opening mouth leaks, etc.

Otherwise go back to your DME suppler and demand they do their job and fit you properly.

I had the same leak issues with my Quatro. Tried the mask liners which actually made the leaks worse quite honestly. Once I learned how to put the mask on correctly and adjust the straps (per the manufacturers instruction) I have had no or minimul leaks. I also use a CPAP pillow with the indentations on wach side and that also helps keep the mask in place while I slep on my side. And I have a full beard that I trim pretty close...no problems.

I wash my face before bed time and I think it helps not to have any oil on you skin.

I have read about the troubles the Quatrro mask is for years. It seems to me that you either love it or hate it and to me, the reasons people hate it is that they can't control the leaks. Have you considered another full face mask?

I have found that all the Resmed full face masks fail to create a reliable seal on my chin.
If this is your problem, may I suggest you try a Comfortgel (or CG Blue) full face, or a Fisher-Paykel Flexifit full face mask.
Since the Amara has essentially the same profile as Resmed, I would not recommend it.

i'm about to order the respironics fitlife total face mask to try to solve the same problem - currently i need to duct tape my mouth shut with gorilla duct tape and then wrap my jaw shut with sticky ace bandages and then use a swift fx nasal pillow- it works, AHI was 1.1 last night and i slept for 8.5 hours but it sucks. I'm sending back my quattro full face mask later today since i paid for insurance which i will also do with the fitlife mask. Good luck!

Good luck with the Fitlife. It is intrusive, but solves a lot of problems.

1) verify from your DME you are using the proper size of Quattro mask

2) be sure your Quattro cushion is not worn out. Three months is about the normal limit of a cushion's life. When that three month period hits, I usually start getting unacceptable leaks no matter what I do. If you have been using it three months or even two and a half months, maybe get a new cushion and clip pronto

3) once you have verified you are using the right size mask and your Quattro silicone cushion is not worn out (not over three months old), tighten up those straps. You gotta play with them and that nose dial to get a tight fit. Unfortunately, I have not found these company's claims that full face masks should "fit loosely" to jibe with my real world experiences. Loose straps and loose fit usually = LEAKS

The quattro FFM handles jaw drop the best of any of the FFM. I have awful jaw drop and the Quattro is the only FFM that has been able to handle my jaw drop. Resmed markets the Quattro as being able to handle jaw drop well. I doubt it is jaw drop that is the root cause I bet it is either a worn out cushion, poor fit or too loose straps or a combination of the three.
