I don't know why some tanks tend toward gunking up when others don't. The tank I'm using now, when it was new, it was after just a few day getting floaties and a film on the bottom that showed up pink when wiping it out. Nothing had been inside it but distilled water. I used to use distilled water and vinegar for cleaning, but have gone to tap water and vinegar for the cleaning process since I know I'm going to want to empty and clean it every few days. These tanks don't come with any claim of being sterile do they? Who knows what germs hitchhiked in our chambers from the factory, or from touching the inside of the water jug cap with nonsterile hands, etc. I think the greater surprise is NOT having a problem at some point.

while there is no way to tell what bacteria came inside the chamber rinsing with distilled and vinegar should certainly resolve that
and i for one cant see how what is shown in the pic could grow in a weeks time if distilled and vinegar were used to clean it

My Last water chamber I got was a cool one that snaps apart for cleaning. I am one of those that rarely cleans mine just adds water before bed. Distilled water always. I would suggest you get a new chamber that comes apart for cleaning and toss the old one. Don't take and chances breathing in some left over particles that may not have come out.

Since the water most likely isn't causing the problem, how about the vinegar? Vinegar isn't considered to be nearly as effective a disinfectant as chlorine bleach. Food service establishments use bleach or the equivalent to disinfect dishes, never vinegar.
Could the clouds be something other than bacteria? Like maybe a reaction of the plastic with something you use to clean it? No answers here but maybe something else to consider.

You and I have the machine. That tank is dishwater safe. If you have a dishwasher, throw it in there and use the long cycle.
Not always disciplined in the area of tank hygiene. When I am, on Sunday when I start up the dishwasher for the week, I toss my tank in there whether it needs or not, along with that mesh net in the sink. Whatever water is left in the container I use to hold the distilled water before bedtime, I toss it out and clean it out with sudsy dish soap and start over with fresh water.

I concur with this approach. Btw - am I the only one who uses regular tap water instead of distilled water? Been doing it for many years without ever having a problem.

Regarding water vs distilled water: If the water out of the facet is working for you, great.
If I remember correctly, the main reason for distilled water is to lessen the likelihood of bacteria and other sorts.
Someone had posted about it back when I enrolled in the forum.
You may also want to do a search on "distilled water" unless someone can actually answer your question soon.

Distilled water also doesn't leave other gunk when it evaporates. Tap water usually has some minerals in it which can stay behind and accumulate.

If you clean the humidifier tank regularly, it may not make a difference.

I also notice a difference in smells. Distilled water has no odor humidified. Tap water usually has a very metal or mineral smell to it to me.

It's not so much how many germs are in the water as it comes out of the tap, but the fact that it has various kinds of "germ food" that germs can grow on if you let it sit for a while. Distilled water is very low in the materials germs need to grow. They'll still grow to some extent, but more slowly.

The mineral buildup is probably a bigger reason to use distilled.
