Requirements for RTs

Okay, gang, and those who are RTs, exactly what ARE the requirements for a person to become an RT? Since so many of us seem to have problems with them, especially the ones employed by DMEs, I think this is a very valid question.

(this is Christine)

Very nice, Chris. Hahahaha

There are RT schools around the country. Mine was a 2 year program, but some schools have 3-4 year programs. There are two levels of being an RT, certified and registered (depending on if you pass the appropriate tests or not). There are some old-school, on the job trained therapists, but most places won't hire them so you'll find they've been working at the same place for years. There are also lots of different certificates that an RT can get, including one specifically for polysomnography.

In case anyone wants a little bit of insight into how my mind works (and before you read on, trust me, you really don't)...

I know RT stands for Respiratory Therapist. I know this. But for some reason, I keep reading it as Recreational Therapist, which the back of my head then translates into a euphamism for prostitute.

Now you all know what a sick puppy I am. I hope you're happy.

Liam, who, seriously, hopes you're happy.
