DUMP left over water in humidifier out EVERY MORNING. And let it air dry until evening and then refull. I blow mine dry with hair blower dryer. The hot air helps kill off anything hanging around. Sitting water (of any kind) inside a humidifier tank without xPAP on) is great media to grow all kinds of stuff. Then clean once a week by your method of choice.

I've also had 'issues' with generic distilled water and only buy brand-name ones now. I'm also diligent about letting everything completely dry out regularly as constant damp will breed all kinds of bugs, no matter how clean it all started out.

Seems that a few folks are suggesting that Walmart distilled water may contain mold or be more prone to becoming moldy than other brand names of water. Have you ever seen an unopened bottle of cloudy Walmart water? I'd guess that the contamination is not coming from the water or the bottle...

never had a problem with walmart water [the one i get is distilled in columbus ohio]---I just rec'vd a new chamber in june, the only thing different is that it is tinted whereas the other ones have been clear...TKS=FA

I've been puzzled by that labeling myself. Unfortunately, our scumbag government allows a certain amount of fraud in labeling such as "fat free" if it's less than a certain percent fat, etc. Someone said that it is allowed to label water as "distilled" even if it isn't as long as it meets certain purity standards, especially mineral content. I can't find any authoritative source for this claim, myself.

Many people don't realize that distilling does NOT produce 100% pure water. While dissolved solids will mostly be left behind, some volatile things like alcohol, chlorine, solvents, and a number of other things can make it through the distilling process in some concentration. For instance, liquor is distilled from fermented liquids, and the output of the still contains alcohol, water, and a lot of other compounds that give the end product some of its flavor.

Maybe they filter it to prevent buildup in the boiler part of the the distillation process, and also to prevent "cooking" something volatile out of organic matter in the water. Once you've distilled it, it might make sense to ozonate it to be sure any germs that get into the water or bottle after the distilling process are dead once it goes into the jug.

I'm surprised at all the people who leave the tank with water all week. I empty mine out every morning and let it air dry (sitting up on one of the sides) until the evening.

When I took my machine to the doctor yesterday, I didn't have a chance to let the tank air dry for a few hours, so it spent all day inside the Hi5 humidifier unit (empty, but still had a drop or two of water inside). When I pulled it out of the bag that evening, the tank was coated in condensation from being closed up all day. I hate to imagine what would happen if it did that for a full week or two.

(And I only use distilled water. Either brand name or store generic.)

without any trouble at all you might add. which would indicate that those who have troubles are doing something different. and those who use distilled yet have troubles are doing something else to cause troubles. nuff said

How insert images into posts...
Same way as posting images of reports.

Open the image to full size so it is easily read.
I use Vista snipping tool to create a screen shot and crop the image at the same time.
Prt/scr key will also take a screen shot if using XP. If laptop is used sometimes the Fn key has to be pushed at the same time as the prt/scr key
I think windows 7 Home Premium has the snipping tool, Basic may not.

Once the screen shot is created save it in jpg format.
Upload the image to a host site. I use Photobucket it is free, there are others.
Once the image is uploaded then copy the ENTIRE IMG address. Be sure to include the opening and closing IMG in brackets. Paste that copied address into a post here.
If you want to use Photobucket they provide a box with the various url addresses and you just choose the last one in the box.
Copy/paste that last line url address into the body of your post.
Use the preview button. If you can't see the image try again because if you can't see it we can't.

I was emptying my humidifier every day and letting it sit in the bathroom to air dry. I finally realized that's about the worst place to leave it! Now I empty every 3 or 4 days and bring it back to my bedroom to dry..... cleaner environment for sure.
Lysol is a good mold inhibitor but you'll want to rinse very well.

No problems for me cleaning and emptying once per week. I refill as needed during the week with distilled water and I'm good to go.

I think the home distilled is cleaner.

I quit using WM distilled because of a build up of pink crud in the tank. Haven't seen it with Albertson's or Fred Meyer DW.
