CMS-50E Pulse Oximeter (Oops! NO LONGER at Amazon

Post by JohnO » Sat Aug 25, 2012 10:26 am

I saw this in another post, but felt it warranted its own Topic.

The Contec CMS-50E is back in stock (via a partner) at Amazon!

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0088P ... 06_s00_i00

I have this unit, (purchased elsewhere) and find the rechargeable battery works nicely. The CMS-50E is a bit smaller than the CMS-50D too.

Having overnight pulse oximetry data as a baseline before CPAP and now after was quite an eye opener, and gives even more evidence that the therapy is effective. [At least, in my case]

[See this note in another thread for before and after data from CMS-50E!

Great idea for a new thread, John--

Let me throw in a crosspost from that other thread, just so people unfamiliar with the Contec have a little added context:

Crossposting my post from Mr. President's thread here: viewtopic/t80463/Opinions-about-self-tr ... lease.html

Just a suggestion for you.

My hubby is new to CPAP (just a month yesterday) & he was having a TERRIBLE time finding a mask that would fit so the therapy would work.

To make a long, boring story short, he was SO FRUSTRATED he wasn't sure he needed the stupid old CPAP machine, anyway. So I did some research online & here at the forum which pointed to the undeniable fact that he NEEDED it for his long term health.

Now, to convince him. He's the kind of person who needs Proof. Facts. Numbers. Graphs and pie charts are nice : )

So I bought, for just $87 (shipped), a recording oximeter. This little device lets you make a 24 hour recording of both your pulse rate and oxygen levels. Plus, it comes with its own software that plots this info on GRAPHS.

He did a night with NO CPAP and a night WITH CPAP and the numbers sold him: no CPAP, oxygen levels fell below 85% and heart rate was UP all night, with quite a few spikes. With CPAP, oxygen levels averaged about 93% and heart rate was stable at 65 all night long. Obviously, less stress on heart, lungs, and brain with CPAP therapy. Pulse was much more regular with CPAP than without. Impressive data. Hubby is 100% on board with his therapy now and has a logical, convincing reason why he needs to be a hosehead.

My thought for you is that a recording oximeter could let you refine your pressures so that you're actually set at the lowest effective pressure, taking into account what previous posters have mentioned about wanting to be at a lower, rather than higher, pressure that works to stabilize your OSA and open your airway.

Here's a link to the oximeter I bought (based on lots of positive Amazon reviews): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0088P ... 06_s00_i00
This model can also integrate with Sleepyhead data, from what I understand. My hubby's CPAP machine is not Sleepyhead compatible, yet, but I understand Mark (the awesome programmer) is working on that.

I have no insurance, either, & thought I'd use the oximeter for my own home sleep study. And I'm in luck-- O2 NEVER falls below 95% for me. My hubby, however, can go as low as 78% w/o CPAP.

I found it very empowering to be able to see both pulse graphs & oxygen levels--it was easy to compare the printed oximeter/pulse reports to his printed Waveform reports (we use Respironics software). It would be AWESOME to be able to integrate with a Sleepyhead report.

You just wear the oximeter on your finger overnight (we taped it in place with masking tape), download the data into your computer via USB the next day, click on an icon to see your charts & press print for a color printout.

Hope this helps; look forward to hearing how your self-directed therapy works out!

Actually, this is an excellent price for a RECORDING oximeter. Regular oximeters can be had for about $29 now (hubby & I bought one in 2004, when the best price going was $299). But the recording oximeters, compatible with Sleepyhead, & complete with software, cost more. This one also graphs your pulse on the screen & can be re-oriented in 3 directions for easy reading (if you're a lefty, for example).

Have you seen this for a better price somewhere? Just curious--I thought it was incredibly inexpensive for what it does.

Other than the slightly smaller (than the CMS 50 DPlus) size, what are any other differences when comparing the CMS-50E and the CMS-50D+?

Other than the size difference, the only difference I'm aware of is the 50E has a built-in rechargeable battery while the 50D+ takes a pair of AAA batteries (thus the minor size and weight difference).

Okay, thanks.
I have the CMS 50 DPlus and I went ahead and bought separately the rechargeable AAA batteries and the charger for those from Kevin at the pulseoxstore. Don't remember exact dollar amount I paid for the charger system but it wasn't very much.
The pulse ox was $70 plus $6 shipping.
I chose Kevin's store because he is a forum member and also he has already done the software work and sends an email telling exactly which works with what. His directions were much easy to understand than what came on the paper that had such tiny letters I could barely read it even with my glasses.

I thought I remember seeing the 50 E at his store but I don't see it now...I maybe wrong though. It may have been some other online store.

I paid $84 for one I ordered in May. When I was looking in June and July, it was hard to find the CMS-50E model. Now I see it showing up again.

Even Walmart (at elast onlin) is carrying it now. For $179.00!

Both the Amazon links lead me to a product not found page... Maybe it's an issue with my tablet's browser as my desktop pc is currently down awaiting an RMA for a hard drive replacement.

Nope, the link no longer works and if you search for cms-50e from the Amazon home page now, nothing is found.

Huh. I would have thought Amazon would have a more graceful page if it was out of stock...
