Infinity Reviews?

Post by qrlylox » Thu Jun 16, 2005 8:51 pm

Does anyone have any feedback on the Fisher Paykel Infinity (direct nasal mask)? I searched this site and found just one thread w/ good info - but it was awhile ago and i'm wondering if anyone else has tried it and what you think.

I have it on order from my DME. When it gets here (hopefully any day now)
I'll post a review.

Is it normal for the nasal inserts to hurt the inside of your nose til you get used to them? Also, i seem to get a good seal, then for some reason it just pops after a few hours.
I wish there were people here who have tried the Breeze and this and could tell me their preference.
I'm lost and alone i feel like, in this process of finding an interface that works. Its horrible that you can't return them if they don't work for you. Not many people can afford to shell out $100 bucks multiple times until they get it right. No wonder there is non compliance.
I want to try another mask type set up also - maybe the Activa, but have no idea how to find a fit.
I wish one of the suppliers or our DME's would have an option of buying used (sterlized of course) masks - why dont they do that? I'm sure they would make money.

As far as fit goes, our hosts here at cpap.com can help you. They have a video on measuring. Unfortunately there seems to be no way around the try it and toss it in a drawer approach.

I have both the Infinity (the new redesigned model) and the Breeze. I have never wanted to like an interface as much as I want to like the Infinity, but I cannot get it to maintain a good seal.

Due to pressure on the hose, the Infinity typically “pops” out several times a night. I have a towel ring above my bed to lower the pressure on the hose, but still have problems with the Infinity.

The Infinity inserts are more painful than the Breeze. Although the Infinity includes multiple sizes of inserts, there is a large size difference between the Small and Medium. I can use a Medium or Large with the Breeze, but with the Infinity, I stick with the Small. I have also tried AYR gel, but the Infinity is still fairly painful compared to the Breeze.

I have had to make modifications to my Breeze to make it more comfortable and create a better seal, but I have not been able to modify the Infinity to alleviate the pressure on the hose.

I still try to use the Infinity once a week to see if there is anyway to make it work. Overall, it is the lightest and least intrusive interface I have used.

I get a good seal with the Infinity and it stays in all night for me, but I too find it painful compared to the Breeze. I hold onto it whenever I turn over, and I take it out very carefully in the morning, as it feels like it's peeling off the inside of my nose. In reality, it hasn't caused nosebleeds for me, it just feels like it's going to. I have to make sure I've got lots of slack in my hose line so that it doesn't pull. I love how easily it packs, but that doesn't do much good if I can't use it two days in a row.

I have the Infinity and cannot get it to stay in my nose once I attach the hose. The weight pulls it out regardless of where I have the hose. I love the concept but unless there is some modification and I am not good at that, I sure cannot wear it. I wanted it to work so badly because I hate straps. I keep trying but end up waking up many, many times to put it back in my nose. No way this was tested with the hose attached or the problem would be apparent.

I have been using the Infinity mask for about a week and whilst if appears to be delivering the benefits I am looking for (better sleep, feel great in the morning), I cannot stand the whistling noise it makes. I am finding that I wake around 5am to remove the mask as I cannot stop the noise, and it is loud enough to disturb my wife as well. One suggestion was that the noise was related to the difference in the room air temperature compared to the temperature of teh air in the mask - not sure about that one though.

I have also reverted to the soft mask straps as the thin rubber strip was leaving ugly lines on my face in the morning and was uncomfortable to sleep on at night.

Has anyone else had the same issue with the noise of the mask?

The "noise" may be caused by condensation forming at the exhaust holes. Mine plays quite a "tune" when I forget to turn down the humidifier. Next time you get the "noise" pull off the silicon seal and see if there isn't moisture around the exhaust holes.

I remember the mask, little strap to hold it in place, looks like Nasalaire freestyle.
It would NOT seal for me and made the inside to my nose hurt. I felt it was a waste of $$. I later searched around on the forums and could not find anyone who liked the mask. I saw the first good review here about a week ago.

I have persisted using the Infinity mask (almost 2 months now) and have now resolved my teething problems. The whistling noise was related to a buildup of condensation and now I have a heater to keep the room warm, and I have wrapped the hose to the interface to keep it from cooling down the air. These measures appear to be working and I am able to keep the mask on all night (most times).

I agree that removing the mask in the morning can be painful but this is only for a minute and everything returns to normal very quickly. I have not had any issue with the mask falling out or lack of a seal - this sounds like it is a personal thing.

I have stopped using the think latex strap and use the full rig to hold the mask on. I am happy with the Infinity, and am wrapt with the results I am achieving with my mask and CPAP machine. Why did I wait so long to do something about this problem?

For what it's worth, I haven't had a request for the Infinity since it's been released. The Swift is by far the most poplular nasal pillow mask I purchase and the Breeze is second. Personally, I like the Comfort Lite 2 the best. Because of it's head gear it puts less pressure on my nose and feels more comfortable than the swift.

I have been using this mask for 4 months. Most comfortable and easy to live with I have ever had. Stays in, miminal leakage. Love it.

I've been using the Infinity mask for about 4 months, too, and I love it. Of course, my basis for comparison was the Comfort Gel. I use the Microgear headgear some of the time, but prefer the more conventional headgear. I'm a side sleeper, and have no problems with it. I'll also mention that I use a high (20) pressure.
