Zyrtec causes acid reflux?
Re: Zyrtec causes acid reflux?
After reading all of these posts I do not see any that suggest antihistamines cause acid reflux but may only attribute to the effects of it. In my case my gastroenderologist worked in correlation with my GP to find one that did not make my reflux worse than it was before taking them.
Re: Zyrtec causes acid reflux?
Well, this is interesting. No Zyrtec last night, and went for a hike today, with lots of grass and spring flowers around....no allergic reaction at all. Prior to cpap, I would have been coughing, sneezing, and having itchy eyes.
So, I'm happy that I don't need Zyrtec anymore. My experience is that it did dry my mouth, as did Claritin. And I think also contributed to my dry eyes.

Katie, I'll be interested in your experiment with stopping Zyrtec since Spring is usually a bad time for allergy sufferers. Please let us know.

Katie, that is really interesting. As a fellow Zyrtec user, I too am interested in how it goes for you. It is always great when one can eliminate, or cut back, on a medication.

Re: Zyrtec causes acid reflux?
I should add that I also purchased a Air Purifier and have been using it 24/7 in the bedroom. So that is another factor.
As I have been suffering from springtime allergies for years, both in WA and AZ, and am delighted that I don't have any now.

Re: Zyrtec causes acid reflux?
I still haven't figured out why Zyretc would cause acid reflux. Did I miss something?

Katie, my son recently mentioned I should have an air purifier. Can you give me some info on the one you have?

Re: Zyrtec causes acid reflux?
Prior to CPAP I was using Flonase, and at least 1 Claritin a day (sometimes two) and had lots of problems even then (often had to take 2 tylenol extra strength up to twice a day for the pain/congestion). Now, I sometimes forget to take my Flonase and don't take any Claritin and my symptoms are down by about 75-80% (no tylenol either!).KatieW wrote:Well, this is interesting. You may just want to switch to a morning dose of Zyrtec, as you'll probably still need it for flare ups. That'd keep the GERD from showing back up.
Wishing you continued success!

Dori, this is the one I bought, from Costco.com:DoriC wrote:Katie, my son recently mentioned I should have an air purifier. Can you give me some info on the one you have?

It's very quiet. At the lowest setting it's almost silent, and at medium, a little louder, but it doesn't bother me at all, it's about the same noise level as a my S8. It's on sale right now, $50 less than when I bought it, and it comes with an extra filter.
It does have a blue light, which I covered with duct tape.

Re: Zyrtec causes acid reflux?
Thanks Katie, I'll check with my Costco here to see if they have it in stock so I can go look at it.

Re: Zyrtec causes acid reflux?
I came across your series of posting while searching for information on "CPAP causing Gerd." What attacted my attention was antihistamine possibly causing acid reflex. From 2008-2012, two sleep studies prescribe a cpap at 8.0cm. I tried repeatedly but could not really use the cpap for any reasonable length of time. During that period, it was common for me to choke during breakfast and eventually found that belching would clear the blockage, which allowed me to continure eating. At the time, I did not think it was relevant but I often loss my voice. My sleep study showed that my SO2 level dropped down to 77%. During the 4 years of non-compliance, the lack of oxygen created a lot of symptoms. In 2012, I requested another sleep study and the precription called for a Bi-Pap at 14/9cm. The morning after symptoms just blew me away and was totally intolerable. The sleep study clearly indicated a correlation between high exhale pressure and CA. Unhappy with the professional prescriptions, I tried on my own an AutoCPAP set at 8/4cm with A-flex. My experiment led me to a new road of success. In July, I flew to another island to seek better medical treatment and now I have a Resmed Autoset S9 set at 7/4cm. During the use of AutoCPAP, chocking never occurred until yesterday and followed by chest and stomach discomfort until today. I usually use a saline solution to clear my nose but the past few days I took sudafed twice followed by DayQuile once. Your messages makes me wonder if the antihistamine cause the acid reaction.
Re: Zyrtec causes acid reflux?
Interestingly, I found on the web that the Decongestant I used and Zyrtex has the same ingredient Pseudoephedrine Hydrochloride. Looks like the Decongestant that I used is the culprit. Thanks to all.

Re: Zyrtec causes acid reflux?
Zyrtec-D has pseudoephedrine in it. You would not want to take this before bed.
There are multiple "Classes" of antihistamines:
H1 Blockers (Reduce or eliminate effects caused by histamine)
• Benadryl (Diphenhydramine)
• Zyrtec (Cetirizine)
• Allegra (Fexofenadine)
H2 Blockers (Used to block the action of histamine on parietal cells in the stomach)
• Tagamet (Cimetidine)
• Zantac (Ranitidine)
• Pepcid (famotidine)
and finally,
• Prevacid (Lansoprazole) (belongs to a group of drugs called proton pump inhibitors, decreases the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Also for GERD)
So, the H1 blockers reduce histamine in your system (or its effects), H2 blockers block it's action in your stomach and things like Prevacid also block histamine action in your stomach a different way.
None of them that I know cause GERD except perhaps on "rebound" (your body tries to compensate, medicine gets out of your system, your body over reacts with vengeance). I know this because my wife appears to have a mast cell disorder, which means histamine floods which cause anaphylactic shock, her body reacts with an adrenaline flood, and this causes havoc with her autonomics (low blood pressure, high blood pressure, tachycardia, POTS symptoms, etc).

Re: Zyrtec causes acid reflux?
I have been dealing with acid reflux since i've been taking zyrtec (the generic kroger brand) as well. I have chornic hives since march of this year. Nothing worked until a pharmacist recommended zyrtec. so i started taking it and no hive break out but i noticed i started having issues with acid reflux. at first I thought it was the blood pressure medication I was taking amlodipine so I stopped for about a month and still no good. so last week I said to myself what's different? I realized I was still taking zyrtec.
so I stopped taking it and the very next day no acid reflux, then the next day I didn't take it no acid reflux again. but then the hives started coming back. so I started back on zyrtec yesterday and no hives and no acid reflux but the very next morning I wake up with bad acid reflux. I've never had a problem with acid reflux until I started taking zyrtec. Not sure why this is an issue.
