Resmed vs Respironics

Hi guys,

I am debating between buying an new "open box" Respironics System One 60 (DS560) Auto CPAP with heated tubing, or a "gently used" Resmed S9 Autoset with climateline tubing. Near as I can tell they're pretty similar, with the exception of the interface, with the Resmed having the much fancier color LCD. Which would you recommend? Anybody have experience with both?

As far as efficacy and comfort of therapy - its pretty much six of one, half dozen of another. You could hardly go wrong w/either one.

Fancier, color of the LCD has no bearing or advantage whatsoever. Amount of data available via the LCD the Resmed has the advantage.

Gentle use has no disadvantage over the new - except - the length of the warranty period. The odds are against either device needing repair or exchange during the warranty period is minor - but - if somethnig does come up a couple of months could make the difference.

What is the date of manufacture of the gently used Resmed?

I don't know the date of usage, or the number of hours, which is what concerns me. The website says "gently used", and states that most of their used machines have under 500hrs of usage, and they thoroughly clean and test it before resale. But I hate buying anything used without knowing all of the specifics.

The Respironics seems to have more data capability in terms of how long it stores the more detailed data ... If that is important to you ...

Data Storage Capacity:

Display: Compliance, AHI, Leak, Pressure 7-Day and 30-Day averages
SD Card: >1 year (daily details with flow waveforms)
On-board: up to 6 months

While the S9 seems to have less storage ...

Data Storage Capacity:

Display: 365 days summary data (up to 500 events per session.)
SD Memory Card: 365 days summary data and 30 Days and 7 nights detailed data

The S9 would have a 1yr warranty, is "gently used, low hour." The Respironics is new, open box, with the 2yr warranty.

And yes it is secondwindcpap.com, so I know it's a reputable store, and I'm not concerned about getting screwed or something, but I wonder which would be the better investment in the longrun, since I don't see us having money to buy multiple machines with no insurance.

Both are top end machines but for piece of mind go with the new

I'd go with an open box Resmed - that's the one I was going to get - I don't feel right about something that's 'gently used'. But that 's just me, lots of people have no prob with it.

I am a long time user of Respironics, and before that -- HealthDyne.

HealthDyne invented the forerunner to what is now called C-Flex or A-Flex or whatever new derivative that Respironics offers today. ResMed has a similar feature ... but from what I have read, it is not quite the same. Whether or not it is as good a feature as Respironics -- I guess only someone who has tried both would be able to advise. Personally, I find C-Flex to be the cats meow. I cannot imagine anything better.

All other things being approximately equal--or balanced, if there is any likelihood you will need to run the machine on DC power,
(camping, roughing it, power outage) Respironics has a definite edge in this department.
The DC cord is very cheap, and uses 12 volt. Resmed is another story entirely: 24 volt, proprietary, fu$$y.

I've got both. It's very much a toss up if both units are the same price and state of used/new.

Each has their individual shortcomings, but they roughly balance out.

The new vs. used would make me choose the PRS1 if I were buying it unless the used S9 AutoSet is cheaper. I wouldn't say you're wrong if you choose the S9, either.

I bought a Gently used S8 with 214 hrs but the machine was 3 yo, Ive just bought a new S9 off them (Secondwind)

I have a Resmed s9. At the end of each exhale there is a slight whistling noise, Has anyone experienced this noise in the System One?
