Funky Taste in Mouth (1st night)

So last night was the first night i was on my new cpap machine.

ResMed S9 Auto
H5i Humidifier
SlimLine Tube
Mirage Quattro
5-15 pressure
Humidity 3.0

I woke up last night and had to use the restroom, then i noticed it.

My mouth was super dry but had saliva (like working out and then having to spit)

Its the spit that is super sticky, and you feel like you must get it out of your mouth.

Aside from that the taste was godawful.

Is this because this is a brand new machine with a total of 1 hour on it?

Or is this just the way it will be every night?

Gee, my mask smells like baby powder....don't know why, but when away from the hose (going to the bathroom) it smells pretty good. 7 nights into CPAP.

Most likely dry mouth and thus dry spit from mouth breathing. You are using a full face mask and people still have a lot of air movement through the oral cavity and it dries things out and tastes like a camel pooped in your mouth (probably smells like it too). You might try increasing your humidifier setting to add more moisture. It is hard to adequately hydrate the oral tissues with the humidifier because it is a much larger area (compared to nasal cavity) to see if that helps.

Might also go get some Biotene gel or mouthwash...Biotene products are designed specifically to help with oral hydration.
Not perfect but they do help. Limiting mouth breathing will also help but that is easier said than done. At least with a full face mask you aren't losing therapy pressure.

I have the full face mask, but I have managed to learn how to keep my mouth shut most of the time when I sleep. Put your tongue on the roof of your mouth behind your teeth and essentially suck all the saliva out of your mouth so that you create a vacuum. Your tongue will pretty much stay there. My mouth still does come open occasionally, but not all the time. I'm glad to have the full face mask for those times.

I had such a horrible dry mouth after my titration study that I resolved to learn how to keep my mouth shut as much as possible. I do wear a Breathe-Right Extra to make sure I can breathe more easily through my nose, which does help.

I have the Climate Line hose, which is supposed to give me the ultimate in humidity, and the tank is usually down to the last 1/8" of water in the morning. At the titration study, she had the humidity way up and I hated the way it warmed the air up so that it was like breathing in a greenhouse or someplace with high humidity, so I haven't messed with the humidity settings yet.

I do the same thing with my nasal pillow mask. I am even getting to the point of wearing my chin strap loose AND keeping my mouth shut! BONUS!!!

What part of the country do you live. I have my humidity set to 2.5 to 3 and never use more than 1/3 of a tank and I average 8.5 hours of sleep a night.

Brush your teeth and use a good mouth wash before going to bed, this kills the bacteria. It will help with the bad breath/taste and help you to avoid teeth cavities. When I started using CPAP I had a cavity each time I went to see the dentist until I added the mouth wash before going to bed, now ZERO cavities.

For dry mouth, the Biotene line of products is really good and made a difference in my dental checkups. I've had dry mouth for years, way before pap, so I've been using Biotene for a long time. Some people like the gel you apply at night, I use the rinse at night, don't rinse with water after, stick in my night guard and go to bed. It has a mild easy taste. If you try the toothpaste I suggest the original, not the other variations (gel, sensitive...). Biotene also makes gum -- I'm not a gum chewer, I wish they would make a dry mouth lozenge. However, the Spry line of xylitol mints has also protected my teeth from cavities.

I live in Michigan. We are running the air right now, so that might be why.

hopefully night 2 goes much better.

luckily i have ibs or lactose intolerance, so i was on the porcelain all night.

woke up and the mask was off, so i only used it for 1.6 hrs…..

You use more water.

The hot, warm air may or may not feel good. Sometimes, people will get some nasal congestion with too much humidity.

Another problem is rainout, where water condenses in the hose or your mask. If that happens, you may hear a popping sound as air bubbles past the water in the hose.

I don't think the Climateline will affect the water consumption, it just prevents rainout and may make the air warmer.

Do you have the climateline heated hose or the regular hose? If you don't have the climateline hose you might want to think about getting one. It allows for great adjustments in the settings so that you can actually have higher humidity and not so high of temperatures so the air isn't warm and sticky feeling.

Rain out chances increase with higher settings but unless you bedroom is really cold...during summer time it isn't that much of an issue. Now next winter it might be but there are ways to deal with rain out if it rears its ugly head. Using the climateline hose will pretty much eliminate rain out.

You may or may not have congestion issues with an increase in humidity. Some people do and some people are like me and the more moisture the better. This type of reaction is highly individual so you have to play with it to see how it feels to you.

Well this happened last night to me. No funky taste since i went out and bought the biggest $15 bottle of Biotene Walgreens offers.

I like my room to be super cold, like my ac is set at 64 all day, and then i have a massive box fan that just blows on me during the night.

Just one of those hot blooded folks. So i turned the humidity all the way up to a 6.0.

Last night everything was going fine and then i started to hear some noises. Woke up and could tell there was water in the hose from the sounds. Took off the mask first without shutting down, and got an instant blast of water to the face at 3am.

After doing some reading, it appears i need to adjust the humidity temp to get it closer to the room temp....

One of these nights im hoping for a solid 8 hrs. BTW my AHI is floating around 3-4 on the machine. Should it be lower, or is this a normal range>?

That AHI of 3 to 4...what is the category breakdown? How much of it is central index?
3 or 4 is acceptable AHI and may even be more acceptable if half of it is central because we don't do anything with centrals with your machine.

Rain out is a PITA. I also prefer a cold bedroom but I like LOTS of added moisture. I have battled rain out in the past and best thing I ever did was get a heated hose.
Do you have the ClimateLine heated hose or just the standard hose? If you don't have the heated hose you might consider getting it because it will enable you to use higher settings with less chance of rain out.
You might also think about using a hose cozy to help insulate the hose and thus lessen chance of condensation in the hose.
