Central apnea and the state of mind

Post by DannyCPAP » Sun Jun 24, 2012 10:11 am

My understanding of central apnea events is that they are purely brain-induced (unlike obstructive apnea that involves collapse of muscles and therefore depends also on the orientation of the body in bed). Anyone has experience trying to reduce the amount of central events by means of meditation, relaxation and hypnosis?

I don't see how any of those things could help reduce central apneas that occur while you are asleep. It might work if it helps increase the tone of your throat muscles - OMMM, anyone? Maybe if you could stop yourself rolling around in the night that might help? I am curious about that myself.

My first thought is that centrals are more related to "mechanical" brain operation, not psychological factors.

However, give it a try and see. Don't be surprised if it actually makes centrals worse.

In that case the improvement would be in OSA, not CSA.
