Didgeridoo Helps with sleep apnea?
Didgeridoo Helps with sleep apnea?
I have heard of this before and also saw it last night on discovery channel that a digeridoo can help significantly with sleep apnea. They went into detail that it helps you practice central breathing and helps tightens the throat muscles. Has anyone tried this? i am very keen to. It doesnt seem that expensive a resin one goes for 35 dollaars and around 100 for natural wood ones.

You'll get a recent answer (and others) if you do a forum search here on didgeridoo.
Re: Didgeridoo Helps with sleep apnea?
You don't even need a didgeridoo - it's the circular breathing that is the issue. My son taught himself to do this using a McDonalds shake LOL. He does play the didge, but the shakes helped strengthen his throat so the circular breathing was even easier when playing.
You can do it with just water, but the thicker, heavier liquid strengthens your throat much more.
Not sure if it helps with OSA, but.....
Cheers,
xena

$35 for a resin one but if you can't actually play it you might have to factor in the cost of a divorce
Re: Didgeridoo Helps with sleep apnea?
The locals around here who can play don't let the women play and I wonder if most of the men go on a walkabout to play...Uncle_Bob wrote:$35 for a resin one but if you can't actually play it you might have to factor in the cost of a divorce
So maybe your right about divorce issues.
I asked a friend about the sleep apnea related issues of this as he works in the Aboriginal communities as a motivational speaker. His take is the guys who keep up the traditions such as playing the didgeridoo are the kinds of guys who go for long walks and eat healthy and end up being elders in their community and outliving most of the other guys. Many of the others sit around and drink and smoke and eat bad food and and can't be bothered to play didgeridoo and the have a life expectancy of 45 in a country with the 4th highest male average in the world which is above 70. The sad state of health options in the rural Aboriginal communities is an abomination.

Like any musical instrument it will take HOURS of practice a day to make it work. Like any physical activity that is done for muscle tone it take HOURS a day to make it work.Stilatos wrote:I have heard of this before and also saw it last night on discovery channel that a digeridoo can help significantly with sleep apnea. The people I knew that played these made their own out of pvc pipe and beeswax. I met them in a commune in California so I can't really say if it helped them live longer. Most of them didn't wear much clothes, ate home grown organic vegetarian food, spent lots of time chanting and listened to their spirit guides to know when to pick someone up from the bus stop (at night in the middle of nowhere) rather then consult a schedule.

I have read that 30 minutes a day- religiously- may help. It's the circular breathing I believe that gives the benefits.

I suspect this is like those cheapo dental devices or CPAP exercises. They may help some people a little, but the percentages are small. It's probably cheap and harmless, so try it, but don't sell your CPAP yet.

My opinion: do it for entertainment and to preserve history.
If there is a health benefit, you may or may not notice it.

Stilatos,
Below are a couple of threads to look at to get you started. There are a bunch of posts that have the word Didgeridoo in them, but it would take a while to look through them to see if any of them contain any good information or are just a mention about them.

Re: Didgeridoo Helps with sleep apnea?
I was never able to figure out how to play the digeridoo while sleeping.
