Recipe for boiling pillows, etc.

Did i do it wrong?? I boiled 2 cups of distilled water in the mike with 1 teaspoon of baking soda, took the container out of the mike , sat it on the counter and added 3 sets of pillows and cushions for my Hybrid, let them soak for 5 minutes and removed. That was yesterday, today, I went to put them away and they are still as cloudy as they were when I started.
So, did I do a stupid no-no and have now ruined 3 sets of stuff?? If I did, I will take my punishment, 10 lashes with a wet noodle...and have to go and buy 3 more sets of pillows and cushions.....RATS!!!!!!!

I simmered mine on the range for 10 minutes, after soaking half an hour in a strong vinegar solution.
I think I should have cooked them a bit longer; as they did improve some.
I got this now to keep them off the bottom of the pot--(at Bed Bath and Beyond or also:)

What's a mike? Microwave? Last weekend for the 2nd time, I boiled the face cushion for my Quattro FX. I do mine stove top. I poured some distilled water (didn't measure but enough to cover the cushion) in a small sauce pan and added 1 teaspoon of baking soda. I brought the solution to a boil then placed my face cushion with the side that meets my skin face down and left the cushion in there for about 2 minutes. Then I flipped the cushion over with the opposite side face down for about a minute and a half and finally flipped it back to the original side down for another minute and a half. The entire time, the water is still boiling in the pan. Finally, removed the cushion and rinsed with hot water and let dry and the silicone is clear again. This is still my original face cushion for my Quattro FX and looks practically new after over 7 months of use with the 2 boilings. I would think the cushion for your Hybrid would be the same. Not sure about pillows...boiling shouldn't hurt them but the silicone in pillows isn't really clear even when new from what I recall.

What a nifty gizmo - how have I missed that! It's perfect for so many things, especially boiling pillows. Thanks for sharing that!

I will re-do my stuff tomorrow and see if I can rectify what I did Perhaps I didn't leave them long enough...my grandkids tell me I don't have alzeimers disease, I have "oldtimers" disease They are right!!!!!!!

Gee, as if the mask didn't look enough like facehugger from Aliens already, that thing looks like the egg it came out of.

I used the basket from a "Fry Daddy" style deep fat fryer to keep stuff off the bottom of the pot and to make it easier to retrieve items for my last heat treatment session.

If you follow the above directions Nan you will be fine. Just use as small a pan as possible. I use a 1 quart sauce pan filled about 2/3 full.

And No you didn't ruin them. Silicone is actually pretty durable the only way you would ruin them is leaving them exposed to high temperatures for a long duration.

Thanks Allen, I am going to give one of the sets I put in boiling water a try out on Sunday when I regularly change pillows and cushion. I had them in the boiling water for 5 minutes and kept moving them around the whole time, but they didn't seem to get the milkyness off. I have been washing and rinsing them in our regular water all the time and it has a lot of calcium in it.....so thats probably what my problem was. If this has worked I will no longer use home water for my rinse........just distilled I would much prefer to spend $1.25 on a gallon of distilled than $50 for new pillows and cushions I can hear the grandkids now..we told you you had oldtimers disease Nana...what are to going to do wrong next

Glad you posted the link. I think it's a subject that should come up in the list occasionally as new folks would never think to search for boiling their pillows or mask seals.

Another thing I've noticed about the boiling that I really like is that the seals go back to their original shape. They can get kind of floppy looking and this fixes them right up.
