How do you sleep during commute or travel?

Post by Firehope » Sat May 26, 2012 9:29 pm

Just wondering, how are you supposed to sleep during commute? I have a daily 4 hour commute (2 hour each way) via rail, and would love to sleep during that time, but I'm always afraid of distracting my fellow commuters with sleep noises.

Also, I am planning on a bus ride to meet an old friend, of which will be 8 hours each way, so I will definitely need some sleep between that. The good thing here is that I will have my CPAP machine with me, but does that mean I'll be pulling that out and using it on the bus, with other people looking at me/sitting around me?

Am I even allowed to use such a machine in travel?

Have you found out whether there would be any place to plug it in on a bus?

Whether the bus company has any policy about using Cpaps?

Whether you really think you'll get much sleep on a bus - notoriously nosier than e.g. a plane?

You probably won't be as noisy sitting up. Your airway will be more open if you prop a pillow against the back of your neck.

Get a seat in the back of the bus and no one will care. Just watch that on some buses the last few rows are higher... Avoid them if you don't want to be up on stage...

Also if the bus driver knows your going to be sleeping and wants you someplace specific, that may be so they can keep an eye on you.

I try not to sleep while commuting since I don't have the luxury of a driver.

Yes, they have plugs, and their online usage policy has nothing on medical devices, so I asked via e-mail and they said as long as it fits under the chair or overhead, it's fine to bring onboard and won't count as a carry on, provided nothing else but the machine and accessories are in that specific carry on bag.

As for the noise, I'm sure 8 hours of boredom and nothing will put me to sleep hah. I'll grab a seat near the back for sure.

The bus I used last summer had plugs for a laptop (and wifi) . I dozed too. I Kept thinking of getting my machine out but there were several babies on board. They were a good advertisement for birth control.

If you use it on the bus don't use the humidifier the power will probably not be enough.

Sorry I don't see the link. I guess a baby would be the last person to be concerned if you were wearing a mask. Maybe not the mother...

As for advertisement for birth control - just check this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NbD_vRh8Ma0

They cried, one at the time. One would shut up, I would doze off and the next would start up. And their older siblings also would take turns whining, running up and down and whining some more. Six and a half hours of that is enough to put anyone off children.
