Septoplasty and Turbinate Reduction Surgery...

Post by scooter133 » Thu May 24, 2012 3:04 pm

So I've been having breathing issues for some time where it seems like my nose if always full though there is little or nothing there. When I sleep at night or sit in the recliner to relax before bed my nose starts to stop up. Does not seem to be one side more than the other.

I've been on CPAP since January 1st of this year. I've been though 4-5 masks with varying results. It always seems like I I can never exhale through my nose. My Pressure has been 95% at 13-15

Went in to se the ENT and he recommended some different Sprays., Tried them with no success. He wanted to try those before anything else. He said I have a Deviated Septum, not huge, but noticeable on MRI. His next suggestion was Septoplasty and Turbinate Reduction Surgery... Then Mentioned not Packing...

I wanted to know if anyone here has had it done? If they were Packed or not?

Thank you,
Scott<-

I would not go for those surgeries even if my nose gets plugged up. This is because the reasons for it, in my case, are not associated with my nose anatomy but b/c of Vasomotor effects of the flowing air and its temprature, and not b/c of Allergies or defects in my nose. After a while I got used to the CPAP flow. At times I used rinsing sprays into my nostrils, such as Ayr saline nasal spray or Water Pik nasal products.

I have Issues with blockages and low air flow without the use of CPAP. The MRI does show a Deviated Septum and sever narrowing on my right side. I'm always having to blow my nose during the day too. )-:

I had this sursgery done Feb 2 of this year. I was blocked 70% on the right side and about 30% on the left side. At first I didn't want to have this done, but after someone I knew said to me, "well, it appears you only have half of your breatehing capacity," I decided to go ahead and do the surgery. For me, it was a pretty easy surgery and I'm in my early 70s. Has it helped my aleep apnea? I'm not sure but am about to find out. The oxygen tests I've had recently seem to say yes it has, but I have also lost 30+ pounds. I would think both things are having an impact on my apnea. I am using less pressure. I am scheduled for a new test July 9. That will tell the story.

Now, even if it doesn't end up helping the apnea, I breathe a lot better and am glad I did it.

That was my experience and I know everyone is different.

Had the surgery in March. Although it did not cure my apnea it has made a life-changing difference in my cpap therapy! I have been most pleasantly surprised by the outcome.

For those that have had it done, Did you have Packing or No Packing? I've heard it is pretty uncomfortable. Though I'd hate for things to shift around after they get out of there. Surgery is Scheduled for the 7/13! So if I get Packing, its in for at least 3 days as I don't think they would want me to come in on the weekend.

About 12 years ago. I had the packing in for about 7 days as I remember. Uncomfortable, yes. Impossible to live with, no. I sure sneezed out a big goober when the Dr. pulled the packing out. My septum was touching the turbinate and causing a pinched nerve migrain headache. I breathe easy and would do this one again with the results that I had.

I had the Turbinate reduction procedure done before I was diagnosed with OSA. I noticed an improvement in my breathing right away but it didn't "cure" me of the underlying problem which was OSA. I still have the deviated septum procedure in the back of my mind. My sleep doc told me that neither will cure OSA though since this is generally an issue with your throat collapsing and not your nose being stuffed up. The Turbinate procedure was in my ENT's office and pretty painless and straight forward, in case you are thinking of doing one first to see if it helps.
