Data Download from the Machine

Post by insylem » Mon May 21, 2012 12:50 pm

Ok My smart card reader came in the mail today!
Yay!
So I got it hooked up, and downloaded the software from links that Pugsy told me about (Thanks Pugsy)
I played arround with it, until I found the way to read data from the card.
It was kinda cool and interseting. But I made a few observations that generated some questions.
Ive had the machine since 2008 but didnt realyl start useing it till last Febuary, when I could revisit a Dr and get my sleep study redone and my pressure adjusted and new head gear so I can exhale.

Anyways,
Everything seems Time/Date Stamped
Also the Data goes all the way back to November of 2008

This generates a few questions
1: How does it date/time stamp things?
The logical awnser is that the CPAP Machine has an internal clock

Wich generates other questions
2: How does one adjust/set the internal clock in the CPAP Machine?
3: How does the clock keep running if the machine is unplugged for long periouds of time without a battery?

4: How much data can these cards store? What happens when the data card gets full? Since mine goes back several years already?

How does one adjust/set the internal clock in the CPAP Machine?
That is done in the clinic menu. Search and you will easily find out how to get into the clinical menu on your machine.

Code: Select all

How does the clock keep running if the machine is unplugged for long periouds of time without a battery?
There is an internal battery that maintains the clock. Just a small button cell battery works. Same technique as a watch where batteries can last 5 years or longer. This would be especially true in a machine that does not have to drive a display.

Respironics machines do have an internal battery and clock set to GMT time but those machines do NOT have the ability to alter the internal clock. ResMed machines do but Respironics machines do not allow for a clock change.
Over time the clock may lose a few minutes but there are machines out there that are 10 years old and same battery is still working well enough that actual times are off by just a few minutes and not hours.

So rayt435 is correct about the machine that he uses because he can set the clock in his ResMed machine but Respironics machine users are stuck with what they have with no ability to change it.

That smart card will hold an enormous amount of data so there is no need to worry. Part of the data is stored ongoing and forever and the other gets overwritten as time goes on. The detailed graphs are the largest and the oldest gets written over. I forget how long before it starts overwriting .
The software only shows the detail graphs for the last 7 days so if you want to see older graphs you have to set the calendar to show a different ending date. You may not have detailed graphs available for March or April though....those might have been overwritten but the hours of use and AHI I think are always on the card hence your much older data.

The smart card must be in the machine for any detailed data to be recorded though.

Several of my machines began to lose a lot of time after about 5 years. At just about 5 1/2 to 6 years it was off by 125 minutes and 34 seconds. I have changed the battery on 4 of them so far and reset the clock but it takes a Smart Link Card and cable and the diagnostic program to access the motherboard on board memory. Generally set by the repair stations.

Wow I didnt know all that Cool thanks,
But that info brings up a few more questions....

Daylight savings times? Some times zones do and do not have it. Also several years ago they changed the time that DST was obsereved, with no way to update the internal clock how does the machine keep that straight?

Also what about moving timezone to time zone? I was originally got the machine in eastern time, now I live in Central, What if I had moved to say Europe?

If I were designing this, I would use UTC regardless of location. The reading software would need timezone information to translate UTC time stamps to local time. For SleepyHead, the timezone is part of the user profile.

The use of software generally uses the computer clock to adjust the times. Really is a non issue.

Encore Pro uses GMT time to start with and you adjust the time zone in the software to where you live and if you move you just change it. I found that DST seems to mess with Encore Pro by one hour and it is always off one hour no matter what I do to try to fix it. There is a setting for DST active but it seems to still be off by one hour. Makes no sense for it to be off but it is. So at its worst it is off by one hour and maybe a few minutes (from the battery losing time).

EncoreViewer and EncoreBasic use the computer clock.

M Series users are limited to Encore software products and can't use SleepyHead.

I'm not seeing a time zone setting for the Encore,
Also,
What is LS Value?

Which Encore version are you using?
Encore Pro allows for time zone change.
Encore Basic and Encore Viewer do not have that provision.

LS in what context? Doesn't ring a bell but then I don't use Encore that often and I likely have forgotten. I will go look to see if I can spot it.

In the Help section is a glossary of terms and acronyms.
LS is related to oxygen reporting and I have no idea why it is there because we can't add O2 report to this data. Just ignore.

LS Value

Low Saturation value (related to oximetry). The value (percentage) is used to depict the LS line in the SpO2 and other graphs in the compliance reports.

Cool Thanks,
Oh and that TIme zone thing I got figured out. I'm useing EncoreBasic 2.0
I had my computer set to ZULU time, when I reset my clock to Central Time
all the times in the data make sence now. So aperently it uses the system time/date settings.
