I'm really distressed to read this sad news and know exactly how you're feeling. It's late now so I'll keep this brief. I'll always remember your kindness to me. A good friend sent this book to me which I'm reading now and I highly recommend it as "required reading" and I've only read a few chapters. At least I understand now that my thoughts and actions are not so unusual under the circumstances and it makes me feel more "normal". PM me any time you're up to it and perhaps we can "vent" together. You're in my thoughts.

I was referred to a sleep doc because of cognitive decline. I was not aware of any oxygen deprivation. I slept fine I thought. Now, I actually want to put it on during the day because I feel like I don't breathe deeply enough without it. I wouldn't be able to sleep without it either but that might be psychological because reaching for the mask makes me yawn....which probably means I just associate it with sleep.

I've been on cpap for two weeks now. I'm not addicted - not yet - but the sheer terror of those events, waking up and not getting air...I'll never sleep without my mask again. I sleep without fear. I sleep on my back, my favorite position, confident I'll breathe all night.

That's probably a split study done the same night. My hubby had his first study without cpap to make the diagnosis and then on another night he went back for a titration with cpap. Now say you're sorry!

OK. I'm sorry, Dori.
My first time was over two years ago; but I was used to crappy sleep then.
I'm really spoiled now, so the thought that anyone would require me to repeat the diagnostic study does not please me one bit.
My diagnostic was an entire night, as I didn't 'qualify' for a split. (methinks they were a bit greedy)
'Addiction' does not even enter into it. That only applies to things that are not good for you.

Her snoring wont matter.

I think she was afraid of not being able to hear someone breaking in at night.

Thank you, DoriC - I made a note of the name and author of this book.

My word, of course - you are right - addiction means 'things that are not good for you'- I looked up to find the opposite word of addiction - No word found!
Let's call the opposite of addiction = CPAP!

You know, reading this post and this entire thread reminded me of my sleep studies. I had two...and I now remember the first was w/o cpap. Honestly, I barely remember much about those days. I DO recall before the second one, the tech showed me to my room and told me just to sit on the bed and wait a few minutes while she finished "wiring" a patient down the hall. When she came back, I was toppled over on the bed asleep. Things were bad in the not-breathing days! If I am addicted to cpap...so be it! I don't ever want to go back to those days either!
