Internal nose pain with nasal mask

Post by junior49 » Fri May 18, 2012 7:38 pm

Several times while sleeping or upon waking up I've noticed I have some kind of pain inside my right nostril. It's always in the same area and is a somewhat sharp pain, but also kind of spread out over an area a little smaller than the size of the head of a thumb tack. I think I've solved it, because I've noticed that when I have it, I forgot to put water in my humidifier, or the water ran out. I've been more consistent in filling up the humidifier tank and it seems to have gone away. I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this and if a doctor or someone else may have told you what it is.

I'm glad you solved it! The job of all that moist tissue in our nose and sinus cavities is to help warm and humidify the air before it reaches our lungs and the volume of air forced into our nose during pap therapy is more than they can handle, so they get dried out and ouchy. If you do this again in the future and find yourself uncomfortable, a generous spritz of saline solution can give some temporary relief. Obviously, prevention is a better option.

Suzi, I noticed that in both nostrils for a few nights when I was trying a new pillows mask. I believe it was caused by the way the concentrated air flow from the pillows hit against a spot on each side of my septum (middle wall of one's nose). I stopped using that mask. You might try different size pillows for the mask you're using. If need be, try a different brand pillows mask and see if the problems stays or goes. Good luck.

Who ever would have guessed there are SO MANY ways to abuse our body, even tiny, little portions of it. What happens in my nose with warm, dry air makes me think of wind burn.

Yes, I've had two spells of severe nose pain . Both times, it was due to the nasal passages drying out. And both times, it turned into a serious bacterial infection in my nose. When the nasal passages get very dry, all kinds of germs find a great opportunity to grow. Now, I never forget to use the humidifier, even in the summer when it's already humid.
Hope it gets better soon.

I have experienced the same sensation, not the same location, necessarily, but it fits your description well. In my case, it sort of felt like a burning sensation.

Here's my take: It happens if I have the air too cold... or too warm. Too cold, and even at max humidity setting on my S9 Autoset, I still feel dried out. Too warm, and if the water runs dry or almost dry, it returns, very quickly (minutes), and so does the misery.

Note: The S9 seems to have the air up to temperature real quick, and if the water in the humidifier is cold, you will have a period of excessive dryness until the reservior and the water in it warms up.

I had to experiment a lot. I felt smothered with the air at 84 and humidity at 5.5, so I turned down the humidity, which helped, but in the morning, I had the return of the sore nose - that form me, lasted all day, sometimes two days (I'd return the settings to previous in the morning), before it fully went away. I finally found what feels a little cold, but seems to have the best results... 81 and a little over 5 humidity. It feels slightly dry and cold when I start, but after that I'm good. I also don't cough as much, or have near the "rattle" in my lungs in the morning.
