Tonight's my first night with a CPAP
Unless one counts my second sleep study. I picked up my new ResMed today at THC of Nevada in Las Vegas, and I think I've got the mask adjusted right. After that sleep study I mentioned, the top of my nose was red and my ENT doctor was adamant that he doesn't want the mask to be too tight.
My sleep study diagnosed me as having severe apnea, 80 wake-ups per hour.
Wish me luck?

Yay!!! Congratulations! I hope it goes fantastically smooth for you, but just remember: even if there are some rough patches tonight, it'll become smooth soon enough. And in the meantime, you're entering a new world of getting OXYGEN while you sleep. Your brain and body (and everyone in your life) will thank you.StevenWinters wrote:Unless one counts my second sleep study. Tell us how it went tomorrow, okay? And sleep tight!

Re: Tonight's my first night with a CPAP
Just wanted to clarify something for very new users, because it's come up in the past... you are getting only air, plain room air on a Cpap, and not 'oxygen' as you would be if you had e.g. COPD and used an oxygen tank to breathe... You will experience better sleep on Cpap as your normal oxygen level rises because the cpap's allowing more naturally oxygenated air to get into your system, but it's not added oxygen from a tank, just the amount in normal in room air. Some Cpaper's do use added oxygen for various reasons, but not for garden variety apnea alone.

One could could the 80 failed attempts to sleep every hour for years as failed sleep studies.
Too tight is bad. Mosts masks work with light pressure. Some work with nearly no pressure for some people. If leaks are too high, the standard thing is to crank up the pressure but sometimes dropping it back works much better. Also different strap pressure works for different air pressure if you have an "auto" machine or ramping turned on. It may take some time to figure out what works best.

Welcome, Steven Winters, and good luck. Yes, your ENT is right- having the mask too tight is counterproductive. I know sometimes it seems that's the only way to prevent leaks. It took many of us more than one try to find the right mask and get the adjustment right. Keep trying. Keep us posted.

Wow, what a supportive and inclusive group this is, very glad I found you all.
My first night would have to be called an incredible success story. I know many don't have an easy start with this, but after taking approximately 15 minutes to fall asleep, I was out for six hours straight. Woke up, fed the cats, drank some water, mask back on for another 3 solid hours and I feel incredible this morning.
A little redness on the top/front of my nose so I'll keep playing with the mask tightening, I'm experiencing zero air leakage when I sleep on my back and only a little when I'm on my side so I'm sure I can loosen it a bit.
To the person that liked my avatar, it's a picture of a sloth! And to the person that put up the link to the Black Eyed Peas song, I just watched and listened to it all the way through, many thanks!

Welcome and glad to hear it was a "good night"
You are right that you will need some adjusting and I can tell you that you will still have some not so good nights.... But overall I am sure you'll really enjoy, as you obviously did for the first night.

Hi Steven,StevenWinters wrote: A little redness on the top/front of my nose
Congrats on you excellent start! I use the same mask as you. I also had a little problem with the bridge of my nose in the beginning. The pad-a-cheek liner resolved the nose bridge problem, improved leakage and is extremely comfortable. If you want to take a look at it, the URL is . . .

It is well worth the $16 cost. I bought two and have used them every night for almost six months and both are still in excellent condidtion.
Good luck with your therapy!
