What about one's mattress?
What about one's mattress?
I just today replaced my 10 year old mattress and box spring. Will this affect my apnea at all? I assume the general overall quality of my sleep should for sure!?
I am on day 4 of auto pap and after 3 really good days at new more adequate pressures, today was a bit of a backslide
into fatigue. Not bad, but noticeable! The graphs didnt look any different than the previous nights where I felt great!
Perhaps the brand new (as of 2 hours ago) bedding will help??

Re: What about one's mattress?
It shouldn't make a difference, but if your quality of sleep (comfort-wise) increases, you may have a better handle on the apnea results. After I conquered the cpap, I decided to increase my sleep comfort. I bought a new pillow and bed. It made sense to me. I had a crappy bed and it made sense to try and increase my sleep experience via a new bed.

Re: What about one's mattress?
Once we get over the sticker shock of our CPAP equipment (or at least stop quivering so violently),
The expense of a new mattress, etc. not only seems less outrageous, but makes some sort of SENSE.
We sleep about a third of our lives. Most take it for granted.
Those of us who have to fight for sleep value it quite a bit more.

Amen! I am fighting right now to get a mattress that is high enough quality to help improve my sleep. My wife is shocked that the prices. But I remind her that I spent a LOT more money to be able to enjoy that sleep, so we ought to have a mattress that we can both enjoy. Perspective.chunkyfrog wrote:... I agree, John.
My Autoset cost less than half what my new hearing aid cost.

I debated and asked around for YEARS about the Tempurpedic mattress. I finally bought one Sept 2, 2011. I even got the adjustable base. OMG I LOVE IT!!! Best money I ever spent.

Re: What about one's mattress?
In their commercial for the new model, it appears that they have eliminated the box spring, which may not be necessary considering the construction of the mattress. Personally, I like the height the box spring adds. Keeps little dogs on the floor and I can slide down out of bed rather than rely on painful, creeky joints to get the job done.Sheriff Buford wrote:Me too... When I bought my Tenpurpedic they had 3 "low end" styles and 3 "high end" styles. I got the highest of the lowest - lol. It's called TempurCloud. Honestly I couldn't tell any diff in the store. And I spent a LONG time at the store trying them out - and went back several times. I think the "tech" is there even in their most basic styles. The only thing I regret is I bought a Queen and I wish I had gotten a King.

My salesman tried like heck to get me to but the Cloud. Like you, I couldn't tell the difference. Oh well. I love it. I need to buy a few more. My sons love mine so much, I catch them coping naps in mine all the time. Life is wonderful!!jen4700 wrote:When I bought my Tenpurpedic they had 3 "low end" styles and 3 "high end" styles. Getting a new mattress was a must for me due to spinal issues, Solid Latex, no memory foam for me TOO HOT! This mattress is amazing, no pressure point soreness. I absolutely LOVE IT! Costly yes, but soooooooo worth it!

Re: What about one's mattress?
The wife and I purchased a tempur-pedic bed. We bought the top of the line hoping thinking it would give us 10 or more years of comfort. With these beds, you need to get the whole set up with their box springs and all. 4,000 dollars and 6 months later, I can tell you I am not happy. I was expecting something a bit softer and more conforming to the body like the one in the store we laid on. This bed is hard. The first 90 days it can be returned for a full refund, but I was told the bed would soften and break-in with time so we didn't return it. I wish I would have. That bed is as hard to sleep on as the day we bought it. My neighbor buddy told me that the pillow top models are actually stiffer than the regular lower line models which do break-in and get softer over time and with use. They're also one third the price. I remember the one in the showroom, the cheaper model, was super soft. Of course has had a gazillion bodies bouncing up and down on them to help make them that way but our super duper pillow California king is a rock after two hours. The thicker the foam is , the harder that bed is going to be and the word "pillow-top" means absolutely nothing but more foam. I slept on softer beds made of dirt wile in the Nam.

Re: What about one's mattress?
Prior to treating my OSA I decided to buy a good bed as someone said to me, "why spend so much of your life not comfortable when you spend so much time in bed?". I ended up with a pillow top and after sleeping on it was surprised it wasn't soft like I expected it to be. I put a piece of memory foam on top of it that's about 1 1/2 inches thick. That made it very comfortable for me. My most favorite bed was a baffled waterbed and I still miss it. I could keep it warm and that kept pains away I didn't even know I had but discovered when I gave up the bed in a move. I tried to find one here but to no avail. Now they have a company here that sells the Tempur-pedic beds and that is what I most probably would have gotten had I had that choice. I have, however, been able to fix this one up where it works for me, including a heated bed pad, but they don't last too long (at least mine haven't, I'm on the second one and it's not reliable anymore). Much prefer the heat coming up from the bed than a heated blanket.

Re: What about one's mattress?
I don't like our tempurpedic mattress. It is too warm! Sweating is not good when you have a piece of silicone strapped to your face! And after the mattress warms up, my "heavy midsection" sinks into the mattress. I don't like it at all. I sleep so much better in hotels! We will be getting a traditional firm mattress soon. I cannot wait!
Another thing about bedding... I find I perspire more when using a traditional top sheet. It doesn't breath enough. We switched to inexpensive woven cotton blankets as our "top sheet" and I am much more comfortable. The thin blankets wash easily.

For those that aren't happy with their Tempurpedics - I'm sure you can get a good price for them on Craigslist. They are in high demand.
