Can a Asthma paitent use a CPAP as well?

I have another qeustion for my relative: can a asthma patient use a CPAP as well to improve his respiratory?

I would suggest that you have your relative get checked out by a doctor, this is an internet site that supports patients with sleep apnea. We are here to assist each other with our therapy, we are not doctors.

If that asthma patient also has apnea it won't hurt them.

CPAP works well for someone with asthma but DOES NOT TREAT THE ASTHMA--you need asthma medications for that. It does however, help in other ways.

For example, using the CPAP you are breathing clean, filtered air all night, so allergies are less likely to trigger asthma symptoms. I find my CPAP very comfortable to use when I have asthmatic bronchitis--it helps me sleep and cough less, but it does NOT cure or treat my asthma.

Some people with asthma find that a regular CPAP or APAP is difficult for them to use because they have a hard time breathing out against the pressure. In that case, a BIPAP machine that gives greater expiratory pressure relief may be better.

that's where i'm at. i have sleep apnea, adult onset asthma and copd. my copd is both asthmatic bronchitis and emphysema. the pulmonologist said i was a hybrid with a little of each of asthma, asthmatic bronchitis and emphysema. i got to the point with my c-flex cpap set at 12 that i couldn't tolerate it and wound up in the er. my sleep doc gave me an apap at 8 - 12 and i'm tolerating it better than i ever tolerated the cpap at my best. i start at 8 and very seldom get to 12, spending most of my time up to the 10's. i even have the a-flex dialed back to one. hopefully i can keep this up and not go to a bpap.

Janknitz is right on target with this thread! I have adult onset asthma as well as sleep apnea, and for me it has been a double blessing. Having my airway open for the night has (according to my pulmonary doc.) has helped to increase my lung capacity so overall I breathing better during the day as well. I am a shallow breather and now that is getting better.

CPAP is used in pre hospital such as ambulances and in hospitals for Asthma pt's. CPAP is used for asthma when the pt has not properly responded to other treatments.Cpap works in certain pt's by helping to get the medicine down into the lungs where it is needed not by forcing air into the lungs.
