Hello,
I am currently using resmed quattro ff its ok. I have been using it for almost 9 months. I Like the feature of under the chin that F&P 431/432 offers. I occasionally have problems with mask slipping up my chin as high up as my bottom lip. I am full bearded too which I understand can cause trouble. I am hoping the under chin design will help with this? Spent a lot of time and effort playing with straps length and tension. It's mostly an occasional thing though. My AHI number and leak rates are good just trying to tweak the process in order to get setup perfect? Sure would appreciate any thoughts? Especially someone who has used both masks? I fear I may be falling into the trap of grass is always greener?
Thanks to All,
John

Re: Looking for advice on masks.. Fisher and Paykel 431 of 432
The masks do not fit the same. I wear a medium 431, but with the foam liner in the 432 I need a large or extra large. I prefer the 431 because it is lighter on my face and I don't like the snugness of the liner.
You may also want to try the Hans Rudolph full face mask which also has a chin support. That chin support felt nicer to me, but the mask is just a tad too long for my face and it pushed against the lower part of my eye.
One other option, since you have a beard. I breathe through my mouth during the day, so I thought that it would be impossible for me to use anything but a full face mask. I tried the nasal mask before starting my titration, and hated it.
But after a year, I started thinking about the hot summer coming up and figured I'd try the nasal mask, knowing that I had 30 days to try and exchange if it didn't work. In almost two months, I have had only one episode of waking up because I'd been mouth breathing, and much prefer the nasal mask now.

Reply,
I tried the #431 and #432 for more than 6 months but had lots of leaks with them. It ruined my treatment. Recently, I have switched to Resmed Mirage Softgel nasal mask with a chinstrap and surprisingly I have seen a lot of improvement. The design of these masks does not rely on two layers of silicone flaps to do the sealing.

Re: Looking for advice on masks.. Fisher and Paykel 431 of 432
i have a 432 and a resmed ultra mirage and am looking to the quattro. personally i like the mirage more than the 432. i think the beard will be a problem with the 432. with other face masks, they sit above the chin and below the lip so they don't hit the fullness of the beard. the 432 goes under the chin and will be sitting over the fullness of the beard. when i don't shave for a few days i get leaks thru the beard area. i just don't think it will work. others may think differently. also when my chin drops toward my chest while sleeping air comes out of the bottom like a waterfall. i can only imagine a beard would make that worse.

As a therapist I much prefer the Quattro FFM to the F&P 431/432. In my experience the F&P FFM leak too much. Dont get me wrong....they do work on some patients and they love them but in my experience I get much better results with the other FFM than with the F&P. I think part of the problem is that it does not have an adjustable forehead piece. Just my experince fitting patients with mask every day.
Re: Looking for advice on masks.. Fisher and Paykel 431 of 432
I just got the Fisher/Paykel 432 and last night was going to be my first night on it. Now, I've always thought myself to be a pretty intelligent person, but for the life of me I couldn't get that freaking mask on right and it leaked like crazy. Then I couldn't get it off. geeesh! I have no idea how it should fit, even though I followed the picture directions. So I went back and tried my other full face mask that I bought the gel nose pad for and that thing leaked like crazy too. When I have leaks I hear the sound of the air coming into the mask also. I wanted to take my masks and throw them against the wall, I was so frustrated and upset that I was near tears. (not a good way to feel when trying to go to sleep) So, back to wearing my freaking scarf and my total face mask. (scarf is the only thing so far that works to cover my hair that I am losing in large abundance due to straps being so tight it pulls my hair out, etc) Summer is going to be a "you know what." I can already tell the difference and it is difficult to fall asleep. I wonder if there really is a mask out there that will work for me.

Thanks everyone for the feedback.. I do appreciate it. I just recently got a new quattro fx but still think I may get some kind of an under the chin version next time. Thanks for the ideas. I did try many nasal masks early on with zero success. Got to figure that my jaw is dropping occasionally with my current setup? Definitely a mouth breather some of the time. The the Hans Rudolph looks very similar to me to what I have now with an extension that cups chin. May make sense?
