Issues with Mirage Liberty

Post by retrodave15 » Wed Mar 28, 2012 10:03 am

I recently switched from a Mirrage Quattro to Mirage Liberty hybrid mask. I switched beacuse I never could get the FFM mask to seal. Well I am a week in the with the hybrid mask and I am having some issues. The first issue is after a couple of hours the mask start leaking around the corner of my mouth. I also have issues with the pillow dislodging from my nose and leaking. I have fiddled with the straps and it is a starting to frustrate me. I am looking for sugestions on what to do. I really like the style of mask, but I just cant get this one to seal. Are there other options in they hybrid style?

Innomed Hybrid (the original)
It costs about half as much as Liberty at our host's site, and comes with all 3 sizes of cushion and all 3 sizes of pillows;
Plus a really nice travel case.

With the corner of mouth leak, I would suspect a size issue. . .
I've also observed a difference in shape--three-dimensionally.

I have this mask and had problems with the pillows at first also; they were too small. I moved up one size and that problem has disappeared.

For the leaking around the mouth, make sure it is clean and your skin is clean also. It helps the silicon stick. Sometimes I have a leak there and I will lift the bottom partk of the mask off of my face, open my mouth so that my lip is touching the edge of the mask, put the mask back down and then let my mouth return to its natural position. This reseats the lower half of the mask for me and solves the leak problem.

Side sleeping is still an problem though. I'm not sure there is a FFM that won't be bothered by side sleeping.

I have the Innomed hybrid on trial but that mask doesn't come close to fitting me without cutting that chin flap off. I am 6'4" so if you are a large person, I doubt that one will work for you. The distance from the chin flap to the top of the mask is too short. Only cost you $14 to trial it though.

How did it go last night Dave?
I just trialed the liberty last night. The short hose didn't come with it and my climateline kept coming off during the night. It fits really loose.
Otherwise it seemed to leak around the sides of my mouth unless my mouth was open and then dry mouth was waking me up. My lips got really dry too.
AHI was 2.9 instead of my normal 0.3. O2 was all over the place because I was awake so much.
The thing I did notice was that wearing it, my teeth seem to stay apart so if I could solve the other issues it might solve my teeth grinding.

I cut my pillows apart on my Hybrid, because my nose is to narrow for the default setup.
I even had luck tying a string around them to pull them a little closer together.
I also trimmed down the inner silicone flaps at each side because they pressed on a torus on my lower jaw.
Feels much nicer now.

A little better

I switched the pillows to the medium sized ones
I adjusted the straps as on the wiki

I still had a leak from the pillows in the middle of the night- it is when I move on my side

I also heard a leak from the long hose end or the swivel joint at the end of the hose.

I am due for a new hose and chamber, which I am ordering later today

I am also going to talk to my RT about the other hybrid FFM they carry as well.

I'm bumping this thread because I've seen some people asking about the Mirage Liberty recently.

And I want to add what's worked for me! Two things have made this mask my current default.

1.) Pad-a-cheek liner. I have four that I rotate to accommodate washing. Not feeling the silicone on my skin is AWESOME and makes this the most comfortable FF mask I've tried. Honestly, I would not have adjusted to PAP therapy as well without Karen's liners, and on this mask, they make a huge difference in reducing leaks. I also have hot pink Pad-a-cheek strap covers on my baby, to give that navy blue headgear a little more style.

Extra bonus of Karen's mask liner is this: the Hybrid liner has two little holes for the nasal pillows to pop through, and they play the same role that a few inches of dental floss can play. They stabilize the pillows, a lot. So not only does this liner make the mask more comfortable, it makes it function better.

2.) LARGE nasal pillows. This was so weird for me, as I usually wear a medium in all other nasal pillows. I started by wearing the medium, and I had a lot of the problems that people had with this mask, namely, pillows popping out. So I was using the ladies' tights trick to fix it. Then, one day, I decided to try the large just to see how they'd feel. And they felt great. Sleeping with them brought my leak line down to near-zero, no tights required. So if you are struggling, it might not hurt to try a size up and see what happens.

Thanks! My Apria rep ordered this mask for me today so I can't wait to try it. Does the mask come with 3 pillow sizez or just 1?

I couldn't agree more about the liners. I'd never think about a "naked" mask again!!
