Question to S9 VPAP Auto users
I am from Europe and I would like to buy S9 VPAP Auto. IN US this machine can run in: CPAP mode, fixed bipap mode and auto bipap mode. In European machines there is no possibility of running it in fixed bipap mode. Hence my question, if I would do better on straight bilevel than auto (in case it will not be able to catch my rera's), can I set the machine in auto mode for example with settings: min epap 10, ps 5 max ipap 16, so it would act like fixed bilevel? Or there is some restriction of such solution?

Re: Question to S9 VPAP Auto users
Are you sure that's the case Catherine? Not saying it isn't the case - it seems ResMed's approach can be odd sometimes - the S9 VPAP is not available in the UK *at all* for example. In European machines there is no possibility of running it in fixed bipap mode
Others will be along shortly I imagine to give you more advice on setting pressures, or if you're (or anyone else!) is vaguely interested, I can tell you how I set mine. Seem to be doing fairly well so far.
I have (literally) just begun to use an S9 VPAP in stright bilevel mode. I imported a machine from the US, so that is another possible route if European machines don't have the required functionality.

min epap = 10
max ipap = 15
ps = 5
then the machine will not be able to increase the pressure because the starting pressures are:
start epap = min epap = 10
start ipap = min epap + ps = 10 + 5 = 15 = max ipap
And since the starting ipap = max ipap, the pressure cannot be adjusted upwards. Hence the machine will effectively be running as a fixed pressure machine.
If the settings are
min epap = 10
max ipap = 16
ps = 5
then the machine will start at:
start epap = min epap = 10
start ipap = min epap + ps = 10 + 5 = 15 < max ipap
and if the machine detects snoring, flow limitations, apneas, or hypopneas, then the machine will increase the pressures up to a maximum of:
max epap = max ipap = ps = 16 - 5 = 11
max ipap = 16.
For most folks, a 1 cm increase/decrease in pressure is not particularly noticeable.

I am sure, the machine is called S9 VPAP Auto 25 in Europe and you can see everything in the above link. I just wondered whether it can be set like epap 10 ps 5 ipap 15 (16 was my lapse), or there is some blockade.

I can't imagine any scenario where the S9 Auto VPAP 25 couldn't be set up like you were thinking.CatherineF wrote:I am sure, the machine is called S9 VPAP Auto 25 in Europe and you can see everything in the above link. It does indeed seem to be a "different" model than what we have here in the States.
I think the best way to know for sure would be to send email to a tech support person at ResMed or call them and see if you can find out for sure.
If you could find a clinical manual for the VPAP Auto S9 25...it might shed some light but typically ResMed does "combined" manuals and individual features aren't always totally clear.
For sure the model that we have here in the US (that I have now) will do what you might want to do.

Re: Question to S9 VPAP Auto users
I've just received an e-mail from my provider and it is true that it can be set this way at fixed pressure. Thank you Pugsy once again You are treasure of this forum.Pugsy wrote:I can't imagine any scenario where the S9 Auto VPAP 25 couldn't be set up like you were thinking.CatherineF wrote:I am sure, the machine is called S9 VPAP Auto 25 in Europe and you can see everything in the above link. Re: Question to S9 VPAP Auto users
If you look here under BiLevel Devices you'll see that S9 VPAP Auto is different than S9 VPAP Auto 25:
http://www.resmed.com/us/products/s9_vp ... nc=dealers
These are U. S. products.
p.s.
BiPAP was developed in mid 1990's by Respironics Corporation, trademarked 'BiPAP'. Since BiPAP is a trademark, other companies use different terms, such as 'bilevel', VPAP (variable positive airway pressure), and "duo".only Respironics' machine is "BiPAP."

Isn't a typo error here?
max epap = max ipap = ps = 16 - 5 = 11
Should be:
max epap = max epap - ps = 16-5 = 11
max ipap = 16.
