Brand new mask, not even on the market yet

Post by craggerss » Thu Feb 23, 2012 10:19 pm

I am relatively new to the cpap world and I am ready to quit!!! I have tried 3 different nasal masks ( resmed mirage fx,resmed micro and fisher and paykel zest) and they all seem to smother me. i was at my therapist today to see what else was availiable and there just happened to be a sales rep from fisher and paykel there, she asked me if I wanted to try there new product not even on the market so I said sure. It is a nasal pillow type of mask and it seems quite comfy, anyways hope it works as good as it fits. oh its called Fisher paykel Pilairo.

Maybe you need to run your machine at a little higher pressure. Too low of a pressure setting can cause a "not enough air" feeling.

6 - 20 means your machine is set to be wide open. This is not necessarily the best pressure setting as it may take your machine too long to get to the pressure needed to stop an event. Do you know what your titrated pressure was from your sleep study? The general rule of thumb would work like this: if, for example, your titrated pressure is 9, you would set your pressure range +2/-2 to that number....so 7-11. This narrow range should provide the needed pressure for your events 90-95% of the time. If, after looking at your data, you see you are hitting the top number for a large percentage of the night, you would adjust the top number up a bit to see if that remedies it. Having the software and knowledge to monitor your own therapy is imperative to become a pro-active and assertive self-advocate in your own therapy.

There is a lot to learn with this journey... start with the yellow light bulb at the top of the page....it is the wiki where you will learn tons of information. The CPAP Definitions is another good place to start.... learn your terms and begin to understand what you are dealing with.

Crag: keep in mind that "mask-shopping" is normal. Few people are able to adjust to the first mask they are given. I went thru several masks until I found the one that was right for me. There are many masks out there and they all are different and the contour of all our faces are different. Keep looking. There is a mask for you.

craggerss .. I'd expect the headgear to be way too flimsy, like SleepWeaver's original straps. I suggest if you have problems with keeping the mask in place, you try another headgear you have lying around. The mask may have some possibilities with a more secure headgear, IMO.

msradar65, thanks for the link. Good to look at it; not having seen the Swift FX, it's a new idea to me.

Glad that masked worked for you. Just keep an eye on your numbers and adjust the range to within +2/-2 of your titrated pressure as mentioned before. That should help a lot.

I am only about 6 months into this myself but I found that if I have the humidifier heat turned on (even on the lowest setting) I feel like I am suffocating. I leave my heater off and just get a room temperature humidity. I seems much easier to breathe. I am still struggling but as time has gone on it has gotten better. Hang in there.

I actually found no difference at all if I don't use my humidifier. So I stopped using it. My sleep doc shrugged his shoulders. He says that humidifiers are primarily (not exclusively) a comfort issue more so than a strictly therapeutic issue. Of course, comfort can indeed be a major consideration (in my opinion) in therapeutic effectiveness, so I don't view comfort as not awfully important. It's important. That said, if you feel the same or better without the humidifier, you may wish to try not using it. If you need it later on, it's always around to be plugged back in. Make sense?

This is my first post ... hope I can be a regular contributor to help people with their CPAP needs. I am a CPAP user and seller (in Australia). http://www.ezycpap.com.au

The Pilairo is fantastic. I have used the Swift FX since it was released and thought it was fantastic but for me the Pilairo is perfect. From my experience with patients, I have about a 70 % success rate with the Pilairo ... much higher than any other mask. In particular, it is great for women. The Swift FX often doesn't work well for women or men with small heads. It is one size fits MOST. I have found it not good for men with large nostrils. Hope that helps some.

Wow ,I am glad it worked for you. I have to stop buying masks. I have been on CPCP for one year and i already have 5 masks. Keep in mind that here is Australia we have to pay for then ourselves. But hey thats ok we dont have your huge insurance payments either.
