I'm trying to find out where I can get a oximeter for my girlfriend who is on a fixed income and cannot afforded one. Her doctor wants her to get one since she is on 24/7 oxygen know. 'The one that clips on the finger'. Any help/ideas would be appreciated. Plus she will be on a cpap machine soon to. Thanks!!

Her doctor can order the test for her, for free maybe, from her O2 supplier. As far as anyone giving out Free units, unlikely. Jim

Thanks, I know that these are not free, just thought that there might be a place where I could get one pretty inexpensive to help her out. The place that she gets her oxygen from could not help her out. Only gave us ideas where to look, been there done that. Still have not find one that fits her budget yet.

i bought a pulse oximeter that just gives o2 sat and pulse. it does not record. i got it on amazon.com, which had the best price at the time and was much cheaper than local med supply stores. i think i remember seeing recording oximeters too but they were not cheap and are probably on the low end of such things. i looked up the one my dme sent for an overnight study and i think it was a couple thousand dollars or more. i don't remember what it was. i doubt you will ever find a used cheap one because people that buy them, need them and aren't just going to get rid of them.

when buying on-line be sure to read all the customer reviews you can find. you can really buy some junk if you're not careful.

Bob, you can Google suppliers for the CME50-D, which is an inexpensive recording model used by some members on this list. I bought one but sent it back because it did not work correctly. I will likely buy another because there is nothing else for less than $600. Below is one vendor with the 50-D for about $62 with free shipping. You can look up Amazon ratings on this device, but Amazon's price is a bit higher. There is a Hong Kong vendor that is even cheaper, but it ships directly from China. The CME devices can be dowloaded with SleepyHead software, which is free at this time, and coordinated with your girlfriend's sleep record.

If you want one for spot checks, they're available at any pharmacy for about $30. If you want one that records all night and downloads the data to a computer, then the cheapest one is probably the CMS-50d. If you google that, you'll come up with a number of hits. However, my experience with the software is that it's hit or miss.

I have the CMS 50F which fits on the wrist like a watch with a finger gizmo.

I have the CMS 50F which fits on the wrist like a watch with a finger gizmo.

I see that has a wireless option. Do you have this option?
Does it cause any discomfort on the finger like the CMS50E? I'm OK with the 50E, but my wife gets a pseudo-blister.
Does the CMS 50F store or wirelessly transmit the Plethysmograph (the squiggly heartbeat waveform)? I would like this in real-time, or at least post-sleep, not just while spot checking.

With the Comtec oximeters one thing to consider is the internal rechargable battery.
My CMS50E lasted around 18 months. The battery is not user repaceable.
The CMS50D+ lets you use AAA batteries.
If you do have an internal battery make sure it gets a use/charge cycle every few months.

The CMS50D records, but you need the CMS50D+ to get the cable and software to download the data to the computer. That information can be downloaded to SleepyHead.

SPO2 and Pulse Rate is displayed in real time on the device itself, it is also stored internally and can be uploaded.
I had the CMS50D and could connect the USB cable to see the SPO2 and Pulse Rate on my PC in real time.
I should imagine the CMS50F should be able to do that over its wireless transmitter but i would call a vendor to check.

I have the CMS50E and can get the Plethysmograph logged to disk in real-time if I'm tethered with the USB cable, but I have to have my laptop within distance and also the cable tends to fall out when sleeping even if the cable is well taped to the device. I've bent things up a bit to try to avoid that. I was hoping for one that would record/store the Plethysmograph without tethering to the laptop. Why do I want the Plethysmograph? (some may ask), because there's quite a lot of info in that, including missed beats, arrhythmias, brief flat lines, etc. that you cannot get in the pulse or O2 or a drop to zero on the pulse might be a bad reading, but the Plethysmograph might show that actually it was a problem (I'm thinking). For example, my wife has "issues", recently in the hospital had ventricular tachycardia and the other night, standing at the refrigerator, in her Plethysmograph I could see what first was a PVC (weird spike/foreshortened wave cycle), then a long wavy beatless thing, then flat line for more than 5 seconds (the CMS50E actually shut off because it *thought* she had taken her finger out). Scary. Useful to see.

Sadly, my wife, cute as a kitten, is only 45.

I don't have the wireless attachment although I have considered it. This new computer I built has bluetooth so it < might > pick up the bluetooth from the attachment ok. If not I could always install the software on the laptop and bring it in the bedroom.

I wouldn't put too much faith in the pulse display.

Counting pulses is one thing but drawing an accurate display of those beats without solid electrical connections would be pretty iffy.
It's getting all its data from the light passing through the finger.

Heck the other day when I was getting mine up and running again I was sitting here testing it and saw a square wave on the display for awhile .. really.

If that display is capable of drawing a good picture of the heartbeats I'm in big trouble

Truth. You have to correlate it with either symptoms (chest pain, gasping-chest-grasping and then syncope in my wife) or other data (maybe brain waves go berzerk) to put any weight behind what you see.

The CMS 50D does not seem to have a record capability. It is the CMS 50D+ that has the ability to record. There are a couple of suppliers on Amazon that do sell the CMS 50D+ for approx. $65. I ordered mine directly from http://www.eastshoremedical.com for $69 because it included a nice case. They also sell the CMS 50D (no recording) for about $30.
