A bit over-done. When that form of "accent" is mentioned in a very well-known and briefly popular ad for beer, it's over-done. Not to mention that pronunciations like "aboot" really are limited to a small region. It's like expecting everyone in the States to sound like they're Bostonian.deltadave wrote:Pretty funny, eh?tetragon wrote:What accent?deltadave wrote:Did you notice my new Canadian accent?deltadave wrote:Why do some masks have such a huge pressure drop, especially when the leak characteristics have nothing extrordinary aboout them?

No hard feelings, eh?
Let's sit back and have a Molson's, eh?

Or maybe some Beer Nog, eh?
Beauty, eh?

You do realize that according to the much less popular sequel to the aforementioned beer ad (and yes, it was for Molson Canadian), I am now obligated to pull your jersey over your head, and start a hockey fight in the middle of a boring cube farm.deltadave wrote: Well, sorry, eh?

What did I miss to say in my post? It is about the size of the tube. if it is extremely small, which does not include most adults here, then changing the resistance setting will not matter much. If the patient is a peds, (which is shorthand for Pediatric, a child) then the RT might be concerned, but I bet they know. Small tubes for a Petite Nasal Mask might also benefit. BUT. It is the size (diameter) of the tube. The size of the tube. The size of the tube.

Re: SYSTEM ONE resistance... mask setting? what does this mean?
Listen, you hoser, the question being answered was about why some masks had a huge pressure drop vs. other masks.deltadave wrote:Did you notice my new Canadian accent?deltadave wrote:Why do some masks have such a huge pressure drop, especially when the leak characteristics have nothing extrordinary aboout them?
From the perspective of the end user, there are a number of factors that contribute to Resistance (Pressure Drop) which must be considered in the search for "effective treatment pressure".archangle wrote:For a nasal pillow/prong mask, the leak rate comes from the vent hole, but the resistance comes from the small opening where the air goes into the nose. The two are unrelated.
Now that I think about it, there are actually two different categories of resistance here.
Resistance between the machine and the exhaust vent on the mask will drop the average pressure in the patient's lungs.
Resistance between the air chamber in the mask and the patient's airway will cause extra pressure drop when the patient inhales, but it will cause a pressure increase in the airway when he exhales. It will not decrease the average pressure in the patient's airway. If the patient is in the middle of an apnea with no airflow, the pressure difference between the mask and the airway will quickly equalize and the interface resistance will no longer matter.
It gets more complicated if you have a nasal mask and mouth leaks.

Exactly, eh?archangle wrote:...the question being answered was about why some masks had a huge pressure drop vs. other masks.
Excellent point, eh?
Good thing we have moderators to keep us on track, eh?
To review, it seems apparent that Mask Resistance (and therefore compensation) is calculated by using Pressure Drop. Looking at some popular masks, we learn:

However, In looking at the aperture of Swift Pillows vs. OptiLife Pillows, there appears to be little (if any, eh?) difference between equivalent sizes. Consequently, as far as "questions being answered", it seems we are no closer now than we were before.

However, as previously noted, proper fit of pillows-type interfaces have inherent issues, as evidenced by this patient's experience:deltadave wrote:In looking at the aperture of Swift Pillows vs. OptiLife Pillows, there appears to be little (if any, eh?) difference between equivalent sizes. Re: SYSTEM ONE resistance... mask setting? what does this mean?
I am sorry if I sounded too direct and offensive. However: The term resistance setting is in the Respironic's System One Clinicians Menu. You guys ever use a System One? You guys are talking about a very important topic that is relevant to settings and how to interpret data, which is deserving of a thread of its own, and also you guys speaking to the less knowledgeable on the forum rather than speaking in what seems code to the uninformed.
Once I tried to write in simple direct sentences. Someone said I wrote as bad as William Shatner.
