Since we are talking about Medic Alert products.. (OT?)

Post by wittymomma » Tue Feb 07, 2012 7:13 am

Just wanted to ask if anyone knows what the paramedics/emt/whoever look for..

Like do they only check out your bracelet if it is a chain or they can visibly see the medical symbol?

Does it have to be red to catch their attention? or are the other colors just as effective?

I have this one..

Which as much as I recommend the company, I dont recommend that bracelet (the rubbery part of the face scratches off) But I know it gets the attention of the Drs & all, even when it is turned away & only the chain is showing.. But would it get just as much attention as say this one:

or the beaded ones.. or ones with the pink/purple/blue medic alert color.. like these

Anyone have any insight?? or know a paramedic or Dr or ?? lol.

Sorry to go all OT on ya-all but figured I would ask before I ordered mine :-p

Just my two cents. I think that the more decorative the bracelet, the less likely the paramedics are to recognize it as having medical information. Perhaps someone here is or knows a paramedic and can answer.

I spoke with a local fire chief and EMT - he said my well-worn stainless steel bracelet with, what used to be, a red medical symbol would easily be noticed by a rescue crew. They're trained to look for these both on the wrist and around the neck, and it doesn't matter if the bracelet has beads or just a chain - it's the charm they look for.

I know of one person who has her diabetic proclamation tattooed on her inner forearm and that has saved her life, literally, more than once - not my style, but effective.

cheers,
xena

Paramedics are supposed to look for medical ID's. Even if they miss yours, when you get to the hospital, they will take all of your jewelry off. Then they will notice the ID. I wear one that is a watch with a bead bracelet. The medical tag is attached at the bracelet clasp. I love wearing it because the bracelet is so pretty, and my husband & kids are happy that I have an ID with me wherever I go.

I say you should get the one you will wear every day. Anything that spends most of the time in your jewelry box is a waste of good money and no help in an emergency.

When I was an EMT on a volunteer fire department in WA State years ago, we were indeed taught to look for a medic-alert bracelet or necklace. In the area I now live in (Denver) they seem to prefer to ask the patient for the information. The last two times they hauled me in I was unconscious so the asked my wife and she got my Medic Alert card out of my billfold and gave it to them.

Here at least, they do not like to have to call the toll free umber and then write the information down. It appears that you do have a medic-alert tag and now, those people send you a plastic ID card annually with all of your medical information printed on it including medical conditions, medications used, medical equipment used, your contact and insurance information, your doctors name and phone number. That saves everyone involved a lot of precious time and is a good thing to have on you. I suspect that if they found you unconscious here and saw the medic alert bracelet or necklace they would also look for the ID card.

Thanks for the info! I am probably going to go with the silver one then.. I love my one I wear now (the top/cheap one) But with the face peeling off & stuff it isnt very nice to look at any more lol. I never remove it & in fact have to have help to remove it the one time I had to lol. (mri I believe.. ) It has been snagged by many of things & fooled with by kids and cats alike.. and survived lol.

I do want to add some "bling" to it and have been trying to find a watch I dont mind breaking to hook onto the other side of my bracelet.. (Opposite side of the charm) But I just cant find one I Like for cheap.. that I dont mind breaking the band off of :-p
