SYSTEM ONE resistance... mask setting? what does this mean?
I am on the hunt for a new mask. A helpful forum member asked me whether I had changed mask settings. I have no idea what a mask setting is or why I would want to change it. I have a clinician's manual, which explains how to change the setting based on a system for Respironics masks. I have an F & P mask right now. So I have instructions on HOW to change this setting to match a Respironics mask, but no explanation WHY I'd want to do so, nor any idea how one would determine how the Respironics based system translates when using an F & P mask. So I am quite confused. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Re: SYSTEM ONE resistance... mask setting? what does this mean?
It helps you determine whether the leakage is acceptable or not. If you key in the mask, it will know the acceptable leak rate and let you know if your leak is more than that.
Here's the acceptable leak rate for the forma. First digits is the pressure, and the second is the acceptable leak.
4 20.5
5 23
6 24.5
7 26
8 27.5
9 29
10 29.5
11 30
12 31
13 32
14 33.5
15 35
16 36
17 37
18 38.5
19 40
20 42.5

It makes the pressure profile gooder:

And if you don't have the complete list:

There do seem to be a pattern.

Re: SYSTEM ONE resistance... mask setting? what does this mean?
Wil from this thread: viewtopic/t52081/System-One-Resistance-Control.htmlI was able to learn that Resistance Control DOES change the pressure wave form, meaning it is NOT for data tracking purposes only (as I had suspected). It can not be compared to the way the S9 uses mask information to subtract baseline vent rates from leak tracking. PR does not attempt to compete with this feature on the S9 for philosophical reasons. PR believes it is better to report a true leak rate and use that information along with the knowledge of the mask being used than to look at altered leak rates.
Resistance Control CAN amplify the effect of mask movement caused by AFlex or CFlex(+). By exaggerating the amplitude in order to make up the amplitude lost by the mask the rise and fall of the mask on inhalation/exhalation (respectively) will be exaggerated also. Not to get too technical, the mask moves more because of pressure variation when resistance control is on.
I was not able to gather any information on how the settings are determined. I would still assume it has to do with vent rates. Full face and nasal masks are all listed as X1, pillows are listed X2-X4 depending on size. Smaller pillows rate higher settings (Petite pillows = X4). Without having access to PR's vent rates, this is impossible to determine with any certainty.
The one thing everyone I spoke to agreed upon: This is a COMFORT setting. Ideally it should NOT have an impact on your sleep therapy results, other than helping one remain compliant. I am more comfortable with it off, therefore I will test it for several days with it off and check my EncoreViewer output to see if there's a significant change. This is all I can suggest with any certainty.
Hawthorne... From what I've seen and the questions I asked yesterday, I can't really tell you anything with any certainty. I would recommend X3 or so if you're comfortable. That's the one thing everyone agreed on, use what's comfortable. For me that's not using it at all...
So although Wil wasn't able to wrangle the exact technical details he would have liked, it does give me a better idea of WHAT this setting does, and WHY I would want to change it.
This stuck out for me:
My mask has been moving more than I would like, so I will try to figure out if the setting is on, and if it is on, how to turn it off.the mask moves more because of pressure variation when resistance control is on.

I don't doubt that is how they market it. What I can't figure is how I lived so long w/o it?deltadave wrote:It makes the pressure profile gooder:

If this isn’t rocket science why are there so many spaceshots?

Re: SYSTEM ONE resistance... mask setting? what does this mean?
That info from Respironics sounds like it's not about leak rate, it's about the resistance to flow that air encounters between the blower and your airway.
The PRS1 machine attempts to compensate for this resistance by increasing or decreasing the pressure at the blower to compensate for resistance when it's doing flex. It's mainly to handle quick pressure changes for flex, not so much for maintaining the average pressure or a fixed pressure without flex.

Re: SYSTEM ONE resistance... mask setting? what does this mean?
I would research the Pressure Drop characteristics of the mask in question and match a similar Respironics mask. For F&P Forma Full Face Mask, it'ssnuginarug wrote:how one would determine how the Respironics based system translates when using an F & P mask.
Pressure drop through mask @ 50 l/min 0.4 ± 0.1 cmH2O
Pressure drop through mask @ 100 l/min 1.4 ± 0.1 cmH2O
Since ComfortFull 2 (All Sizes: S-M-L) is X1 Resistance and
Pressure Drop cm H2O (hPa) 50 LPM 0.4
Pressure Drop cm H2O (hPa) 100 LPM 1.0
it would seem that X1 setting would fit the bill.

On this Second Greatest Sports Day of the Year, I must admit to having been briefly perplexed as to the nature of your question.GumbyCT wrote:Unprecedented silence?.. wait til next year?GumbyCT wrote:I don't doubt that is how they market it. However, upon careful reflection, I see the answer as being a resounding "Yes!!"

Swift FX:
Resistance Drop in pressure measured (nominal):
at 50 L/min: 0.4 cm H2O
at 100 L/min: 1.4 cm H2O
Lower than one would have suspected.

Re: SYSTEM ONE resistance... mask setting? what does this mean?
Do you suppose the lower resistance drop with the Swift FX explains the fact that when I tried the various System Resistance settings that I really didn't notice any difference with any of the settings (how it felt while awake), nor any difference in reported leak which I saw nothing other than normal variables.?deltadave wrote:Swift FX:

Tried this back when I was using APAP 10/20 and overall average was around 12. For me I saw no added benefit or drawback that I could perceive with any of the settings.

Swift LT-F:
Resistance Drop in pressure measured (nominal):

Hmmm.
One wonders:
Is System One Resistance Control a helpful adjunct or a workaround for a design flaw?
