Eliminating tobacco odor - nasal pillows etc

Post by MDALE » Thu Feb 02, 2012 7:59 pm

Does anyone have an effective way to get rid of the tobacco smell in a nasal pillow? I traded for a different size with someone and there must have been a smoker in the house.

I've tried vinegar w/o success.

Thanks

I lent a mask to the wife of a heavy smoker, and it still reeked after washing it twice.
I did not use vinegar, but unscented dish soap, and rinsed in tap water.
The headgear, I washed with my regular delicates (in a mesh bag).
I hung it up uncovered in a closet, and a month later, it was good to go.
No idea what (besides time) worked.

I'll give it a try. Thanks!

The lesson here is, "When doing a nasal pillow exchange, always specify, "Non-smoking households only.'"

I've not found anything that removes the smell of smoke. I've heard that ozone helps but other than putting it out in the sunshine do not know how that would be applied. When I tried that it simply reduced the smell - somewhat.

Beware that sunshine could deteriorate some silicone products.

Scented soaps or mouthwashes may help reduce it some? As soaking in baking soda and water may? Or just baking soda?

Live and learn when trading what to ask. Life is simply a learning experience.

fwiw - non-smokers may not know that smokers don't (as cannot) smell the odor as with any other constant smells the brain blocks them out but is alert to "changes" or "new smells".

This sounds obvious, but did you change the machines filter after washing your interface?

I guess if in the same situation, I might try submerging it in a bag of fresh uncooked rice for a week.
Cheap, and it just might help.
Add a pinch of herbal tea leaves at your own risk--I might do that in the steamer when I try that.

You know, strangely enough, I smoked for 16 years. When I quit I found out two things. One was that cigarette smoke was one of the nastiest smells I've smelled and two, I'm allergic to cigarette smoke. I smell it now and I feel wheezy and my sinuses stuff up, etc. Just can't figure out how I missed that while smoking. I hope you figure it out. I can't imagine having to sleep with that smell anymore.

Yikes! I read my last post, and no, there will NOT be rice in the steamer!

I happen to own a ozone generator, putting the generator along with the item that is smelled up in a small confined room/ space and running it should do it. The one problem with using an ozone generator is that has a habit of breaking down foam, so don't over do it!

I haven't tried it on nasal pillows, but my go-to remedy for things that have absorbed odors is to wash (which you've done), rinse well, and then coat with or bury in dry baking soda for a few days. I have no smokers in the house, but I do this with any new thing that arrives with a strong chemical or plasticky odor. It works. Maybe it would work for smoke too.
