OT Reason to fly
OT Reason to fly
America is truly beautiful by small plane, I thought I'd share these photos I ran across . So if you need a break from Hosehead land , enjoy this guys journey. Kathy. http://www.vintageflying.com/vintagefly ... 202011.htm
Any landing you walk away from is a good one; if you don't break your airplane it's excellent.
Re: OT Reason to fly
Great pictures Kathy...thanks!
Makes me nostalgic for my younger days when I was a skydiver and pilot. I flew all over north Florida and especially loved routes along the coast for the beautiful scenery. Had a 1959 Cessna 150...cute orange and white paint job.

Fantastic! I'm an old A&P mechanic and have been for the last 38 years. I really appreciate your photos and look forward to your post following your 2012 excursion. Fly safe! and many thanks.

As a GIS person, I can't get enough of satellite images.
These beautiful, 'close-ups' of the earth brought me to tears.
Thank you.

Re: OT Reason to fly
I sent the link to my dad, who was once an airplane mechanic and used to fly model planes. He is looking at them now, laughing at the bits of plane showing in the photos.
I have been doing a lot of flying the last year back and forth to Edmonton. If I don't have a stop over in Toronto they take the Northern route across the Precambrian shield. The views are spectacular but the number of perfectly round lakes is kind of scary for someone who watches a lot of Discovery channel science shows.

What is GIS? Glad you enjoyed the pics. I always loved the view from low and slow airplanes Kathy

Geographic Information Systems.
I draw computer maps, based on satellite GPS (Geodetic Positioning System) points.
I can access satellite images to bring my drawings into perspective.
I can see everyone's house. . .

Cool! Guess I better make sure not to leave junk outside if people are watching.chunkyfrog wrote:Geographic Information Systems.

Re: OT Reason to fly
Only the military has access to real-time images (if even they do)
What I can see is one moment in time, at least a year ago.
The very best resolution I can see, depending on where it is, means 6" pixels--not too revealing.
Most stuff is one foot or one meter resolution--my car is six dots.

Interesting, where would one see such maps? who uses them? Does the military provide the old satellite images? how about cloud cover? Guess my backyard is safe for nowchunkyfrog wrote:Only the military has access to real-time images (if even they do)

Aeronautical charts (VFR /visual) certainly don't do justice to beautiful terrain , and IFR/ instrument charts are a bunch of lines, numbers, circles, and letters with no relation to land except to let you know how high you need to be to avoid it while on the highways in the sky.

Re: OT Reason to fly
I am also a pilot and an aircraft owner. I own and fly a Grumman AA5B Tiger from my airstrip home here in North Florida. 7FL4 for those of you who know how to look up airstrips. One of the issues I am worried about with ths Sleep Apnea thing is how it will effect my FAA Medical. I see in your photo spread you are flying a J3. Do you still carry a Medical or are you strictly Light Sport (no medical required for those non-pilots that are reading this).

I am also a pilot. I hold a JAA CPL with Instrument Rating and Instructor privileges.
I have a class 1 Medical although I have OSA. I had to prove I didn't have sleepiness problems (MWT test) and now I just have to give a copy of my data (summary given in Encore Pro) every year when I renew my medical (showing compliance and low AHI).
