chinstrap over or under mask?

Post by newname » Wed Feb 01, 2012 6:45 am

I was having no luck using chinstrap under my mask. last night I put it over my mask and it worked!!!!! no dry mouth and I slept about 6 hours. Imagine that, I'd been wearing it wrong all these years!!!! No one explained how to wear it until a new therapist told me how he wears his. Maybe I won't need a ffm afterall. I do wake up with red lines outlining where my activa LT rests, but maybe I should loosen that now that I'm putting the chinstrap over it. Even my hair doesn't get messed up. The chin strap holds everything in place and the mask does not move. I'm very happy.

How does everyone else where their chin strap, over or under mask?

Hi NN,
I've switched to a FF mask, but prior to that used a nasal mask with chinstrap. Nobody told me how to do it, and I put it on the outside (just chance). I found it stabilized the mask straps and reduced leaks. Also, for someone who tends to remove their mask subconsciously...having the chinstrap on the outside makes that a little more difficult.

Glad you worked that out. Small things can sometimes make a big difference.

My DME RT told me to put the mask on first, then the chin strap. This was for Swift LT nasal pillows.

When I wear mine I wear it under my Swift FX. I tried it over but under worked so much better. I agree with Nan what ever is best for you is what you should do.

LOL, I tried that and had the opposite results. But now you are making me curious.

I just wonder why all the people who sell you the chin straps don't tell you how to wear it!!
This would have been a great help to me 5 years ago when I started cpap.

Chin straps are just like toilet paper rolls, there are over people and there are under people

I am a chin strap under the mask head gear kind of hose head. The toilet paper... well, it's got to be over, never under Oh, sorry, T. M. I.

After sleeping last night with the chinstrap over the Swift FX Nasal Pillows mask that I have, I am a convert. AHI of 0.87! Best I have had in a while. The only problem I can see with having the strap over the mask is that it makes the mask harder to adjust, especially when you are down to making little tweaks. So, maybe the recommendation should be to adjust with the strap under the mask, but for normal sleeping, put the strap on over the mask. Works for me, but maybe there are a lot of people who will disagree with me - that's OK, too!
