Humidity setting on ResMed S9 Autoset H5i

Post by EEB » Sun Nov 07, 2010 5:15 pm

Have had a CPAP for several years with nasal pillows
Just got a ResMed S9 with H5i but not the heated tubing
So, a couple nights of adjusting settings and understanding the machine a bit.
Confused about the Humidity setting
When I set the level, I do not seem to get any heating of the unit and no water is used during the night. The unit does not heat at all when I have checked it. When I turn off the machine and then restart I notice the humidity setting is again orange. At first I thought something was wrong so clicked the set button to return it to blue. Is that the correct thing to do? Am I doing something wrong or is the unit defective? Every time it starts the humidity setting begins as orange and is always orange when I view it or restart after an hour or so.
If I do a Warm Up with holding the button down for 3 seconds, the plate will warm up.

The round button on the right is a dial numbers go from 0 to 6 in .5 incraments. Turn the dial to a larger number. I have noticed that the S9 does use less water than my old Remstar. It bases the absolute amount of heat on the ambient room temperature and humidity (I think)

I would recomend getting the climateline hose. When you connect it to the humidifier just select the temperature you want and the humidifier will keep it at that temp with a constant 80% humidity. You will be able to feel the warmth and you will see a big difference in the water level in the morning.

Just be very careful with the climateline. It will tear very easily where the hose meets the rubber cuff. Same with the slimline.

I don't have the heated hose either with mine. I put my humidity control on "Manual" and then I have to put my humidity setting on 4 before I notice any water missing in the morning. I find that 4 works great for me.

Thanks to all.
So, when I start the machine, if the humidity is in orange, do I have to click it to blue or will it automatically do the humidity at that level, whether orange or blue?
Just trying to make sure it will work when humidity is needed.

I think you turn it to blue when you want to change a setting, than click again back to orange and it will keep that setting.

I HAVE TRIED THE RES-MED S9 AND NOW TRYING REMSTAR AUTO A FLEX. AFTER GETTING THE CLINICIAN MANEL FOR THE S9 , I FOUND AT 72 DEGREES F AND LEVEL 5 THAT I WAS ABLE TO USE ALMOST A FULL RESERVIOR OF H2O DURING A 8-9 HOUR SLEEP , BUT STILL FELT DEHYDRADED. TO USE THE DIAL ON THE S9 FOR HUMIDITY AND OVER RIDE AUTO HUMIDITY YOU MUST GET INTO PATIENT OR CLINICIAN MODE FOR HUMIDITY AND DIABLE AUTO ANDS MUST HAVE CLINICIAN MANUEL.

NOW TRYING REMSTAR AUTO FLEX WHICH HAS A LARGER RESERVOIR OPENING AND CAPACITY THEN THE S9 . IT ALSO HAS IN IT'S USERS MANUEL A SYSTEM ONE HEADING ON PAGE 9. THAT MUST BE DISABLED TO USE MANUAL ADJUSTMENT AS WELL AS SELECTING A SETTING FOR HUMIDIFERER C1-C5 IN SET UP MODE . NOT SURE ABOUT THE LATTER , BUT TRYING TONIGHT .

WITH SYSTEM ONE ON AUTO THE LIGHT ON FACE OF UNIT CAN BE CRANKED TO 5 , THIS SETTING ONLY USES ABOUT 25 % OF RESERVIOR DURING A 8-9 HOUR SLEEP , FAR LESS THEN THE S9 AND FAR DRYER. TONIGHT I AM DIABLING SYSTEM ONE HUMIDIFICATION USERS MANEL (page 9 ) IN HOPES THAT THIS WILL GIVE ME THE MOISTURE I NEED.

When you start the Resmed S9 machine it will show you the humidity level and below that is the pressure. The humidity setting will turn orange that is what it is supposed to do, it makes it easier to change the humidity while you are using the machine. Lets say you turn it on and it highlights orange. If you change the humidity level and just leave it orange, when the machine turns off it will keep it at that new setting. Go ahead and try it out. So to answer your question that is completely normal, if you want the machine to heat up more try turning it into the 4-6 range. Also the climateline will help.

John you may also want to monitor the humidity in you bedroom as well. I also run a humidifier in my bedroom in addition to my S9 humidifier running on climateline. I heat with forced air gas heat and its quite dry in general. I was waking in the morning feeling very parched!!

Added the free standing humidifier in my bedroom which runs at night and the problem went away.

I am new to all of this. I want to change the humidity setting on my s9 but I can't figure out how to do it. I can go to climate control and it allows me to change the temperature. I can't get to humidity level. I want to turn it up because I am drying out. The manual says to just go to humidity level from the home screen, but it is not there - only climate control.

You must have the climate hose, it changes humidity automatically. Higher temperature = higher humidity. If you want to do it manually, watch the video that someone posted a link to above, I think it's about 15 minutes into the video.

Can a person override the temp and go higher than 86 degrees? I have mine cranked and so far I get 6 hours into my night and wake up dry. Very frustrating.

Which is dry, the tank or your mouth? If it's your mouth at that temp you most likely are mouth breathing. Do a search for mouth breathing to find numerous discussions about how to deal with it.

I wasn't sure about the blue-orange difference either, even after I read the user's manual!
After my appointment yesterday with my DME person, I think I get it now-
Stuff on the screen is blue until you push the dial to "select" it. That's like double-clicking your computer mouse on something. So, to change the humidity or temperature, you scroll with the dial until the water drop thing is highlighted (it's in the middle on my machine). Then you push on the dial and it should highlight in orange. While it's orange, you can change the numbers by turning the dial. Then, you can either push the dial again to "deselect," or leave it alone and it'll go back to blue on its own.
Hope that helps!
