resmed autoset apnea # unexplanable
resmed autoset apnea # unexplanable
I have a resmed elite s8 autoset II with about 5000 hours on the clock. I check the clinical menu to see how the previous nights trearment went. Usually I see apneas between 2 and 5, hyponeas between 5 and 10, mask leaks 0.18.. Recently, I have had two nights with apneas at 20 and 30, hyponeas at 30 and 40, and mask leaks at 0.00! I have just had another sleep study but do not have the results. Any ideas here??

What pressure range have you been using that gave the higher than usual AHI numbers?
Was the recent sleep study to get an idea of different pressure needs?
Hard to say what might be going on. Have you gained any weight that might lead to more pressure needed?

Check what your settings are. Did they change?rbtgjns wrote:I have a resmed elite s8 autoset II with about 5000 hours on the clock. How long have you had it? (In years)
Maybe it's broken.
Probably off warranty--unless it's a rental.

I think you're going to have to wait and see what the sleep study results are.

The setting are 13 to 16. Average 13.4 to 13.8. I average 6+ hours of sleep per night, sometimes 7+. The machine is over 2 years old and has been flawless so far. I do question: is the APAP machine having an intermittent fault or is the a change from obstructive apnea to another form of apnea? The sleep tech told me that she increased the pressure setting from 10 up to 18 during the test, and she applied a chin strap to eliminate mouth breathing. My weight is increasing as I age but has been stable for over one year.
Re: resmed autoset apnea # unexplanable
S8 machines have a reputation for recording more apneas than other machines.
Keep an eye on the trend. If it's just two nights, who knows?
Just for the heck of it, unplug the machine for a few minutes.
If the problem continues, you might consider getting the software to read the data, but the card reader is really hard to find.
A new S9 or PRS1 CPAP machine is much easier to read the data from because it uses a standard data card that's much easier to read, and it works with the free SleepyHead machine. They also record much more useful data.

Re: resmed autoset apnea # unexplanable
I doubt there is a problem with the machine but I supposed it is not entirely impossible.
Perhaps your body has changed. Perhaps the type of events did change (you will know when you see your sleep study results). Perhaps the mouth breathing (requiring chin strap) was allowing large leaks so that your machine couldn't score the events properly and now you are keeping your mouth shut and machine is scoring better.
I think the best thing is to do what you really have no choice to do right now....wait for the sleep study results and see what it shows. Obviously something has changed. Now to wait and find out what.
I assume that your DME has already checked the pressure delivered on your machine with a manometer..just in case?
