Cpap machines are not sold on ebay. Sellers list them, but ebay pulls the auction as soon as it's discovered. Many times, a seller will list a cpap machine, and potential buyers will send the sellers emails to let them know they are interested. That way, when ebay pulls the ad, the seller can contact the interested potential buyers. Masks, chin straps, etc (since they do not require a prescription) can be sold on ebay.

linda--in my monitering of ebay over the last two weeks, i see that changing, but not uniformly. ebay and sellers are starting to get the message that all that is required is that warning that if asked for a prescription, buyer must provide it. i have seen machine auctions actually ending on time with multiple bids without being yanked, and they usually have the warning.

same with masks, although one guy's mask got yanked and he went overboard on the warning, saying that he definitely would ask for the prescription. i emailed him, asking what his "problem" was, given that masks are not a prescription item, and he wrote me back that he was playing it safe because he was tired of his auctions being yanked because he didn't have the warning--still, his auction got yanked.

I would have to agree with that statement. Over the last few weeks, Ebay has been allowing CPAPs/APAPs to be sold without abruptly haulting the auction. As for the uniformity, I am unsure.

Keep an eye to good ol' Ebay, and surely you'll find a good deal. Where else can you buy a grilled cheese with a picture of Mary? (If your unaware of that story, please disregard! I didn't make it up!)

I monitor eBay constantly and I did note an increase over the past 2 weeks, of xPAPs - many without the word cpap in them.

I tag most cpap listings then time how long before they get pulled.

Last week I had about 9 tagged & all had been pulled except a couple with very careful wording (no 'cpap' no 'apnea' etc:).

The 'trend' on eBay has been to get tighter & tighter. Yes an occasional item gets through but in balance the thumbscrews on cpap listings are getting tighter & having the official notification makes no difference.

One trend that has bothered me though is the increasing number of people listing on eBay who make false or clearly misleading remarks about the xPAPs they are listing. These remarks can be in the form of implying the model is current when those in the know can see it might be the generations obsolete, the other remarks relate to the original cost but I guess if someone paid $2000 for a $600 cpap, because they did it through some insurance scheme, they may feel justified boosting the price the cost of their machine.

I believe a good percentage of xPAPs are being listed by people who have obtained the machines indirectly and who actually know little about xPAP therapy.

Anyway, point is that eBay have *not* relaxed their policy just occasionally they relax their vigilance.

Just did a check & located 10 xPAP machines on eBay. That is a larger than usual number to be there on the same day.

I'll report back in 2 days as to how many get pulled vs how many complete a sale.

The range & type of machines is also surprising.

Wow. That's a bunch. I love Ebay - I buy and sell on it. But I get real leary of an expensive item when the seller has 0 feedback.

DSM, take a look at 5676562964. Now the seller says it was used twice, but it registers 0 hours of usage. Now, I don't have this machine, but mine registers hours in that window. What would your reaction be to that - legit or not? (no, I'm not in the market). lol.

Actually, I'm going to a sleep doctor in a week (haven't seen one since my sleep study 3 years ago). I'm going to ask for a new prescription so I can get a new Remstar Auto w/cflex, to replace my obsolete Remstar Auto. Looking forward to it.

linda and others--how often does your insurance replace your machine? how much compliance do they look for before replacing/upgrading a machine? the article ozij referred me to was a peer-reviewed article advocating patient monitering his own therapy, saying that one reason patients don't comply is that they're unable to see their own results (the article was written in 2003.) my machine has 2200 hours on it, but it wasn't brand new when i got it--i got it five years ago, i don't know if the dme reset the hours to zero when i got it or what. there's a tag on it that they fixed the starter. so i'm wondering if i made the efffort to get back with a sleep doctor whether they would give me a new machine.

For some reason, eBay only pulls the auctions that have CPAP in the item title. I listed a Respironics mask that I was unable to use several weeks ago and eBay pulled it very quickly. I couldn't figure out what the problem was, as I had seen several masks in "completed" auctions which had sold. I decided to try again, leaving the "CPAP" out of the title and description -- lo and behold, I had no problem. I sold my item fine. I listed another one about a week and a half ago and had the same good fortune. Ebay is apparently bird-dogging listings that reference CPAP, APAP, etc. but not by brand name, etc. Fortunately, those of us who need this equipment know what to look for!

i laughed a couple of weeks ago because one person listed her auction as
C PAP. and her item sailed through without the warning.

for what it's worth, i just bought a new swift on yahoo as a buy-it-now for $65 plus shipping. the seller has more. she is an ebay seller of other stuff with near-perfect feedback of more than 700; she says she's going back to ebay and putting the warning on her stuff. her ebay/yahoo name is eandski.
