boil and bite

Post by rosedec21 » Sun Mar 12, 2006 10:32 pm

Hi , I'm kind of new here. I've been reading about the boil and bite idea for keeping your mouth closed during the night. I don't understand how that helps because when I looked it up , it is only one piece ? I have the swift nasal pillows and I've been using it since July , but I know my mouth comes open during the night and the chin strap just doesn't help and I can't use tape due to sensitive skin . Thanks in advance !------Rose

The idea is that is uses (and trains) the TONGUE to do the blocking, not your lips or teeth, which is a much more effective blocker.

The "DIY" (Do It Yourself) mouthguard thingy is not for keeping the mouth closed. As snork1 said, the DIY is to push and hold your tongue in a position that seals off air from escaping from your throat out your mouth.

If the DIY is made correctly, a person can actually have their mouth hanging open and still not have any air leak out. That's because the DIY forces the tongue to do all the sealing, like a dam -- inside the mouth.

i have a bite plate for teeth grinding , that I haven't been wearing , due to getting used to the cpap. I wonder if that would work the same way then

Not unless it pushes your tongue into a sealing position -- usually at roof of mouth or spread out wayyy back at the entrance to the throat.

boil and bite pieces work great. I use mine every night along with a chin strap.

I made one that pushes the tongue up toward the roof of my mouth.

All I did was create a "shelf" out of some boil and bite plastic that I snipped off of the ends of the mouthpiece. I heated up the snipped pieces and molded the "shelf". Then I took that piece, heated it and applied it to the main mouth piece that I pre-fit to my upper teeth.

Costs about $4.00 .. works like a million bucks!

Here'a a pic:

I never dealt with a boil and bite piece before jcarn , so how does this extra piece stick to the mouth piece ?

I took a medium adult size mouthpiece and cut off each end about 1/2 inch in.
I use the two pieces that I cut, boil those until they are plyable. While they are still hot, I mold them together with my fingers. I end up with a flat "plate".
I then boil up the "plate" and the mouthpiece and mold them together. I also placed the final piece in my mouth to "fine tune" while it is still hot.

It's kinda hard to describe, but this link has similar instructions with photos:

I basically used this model and tweaked it for my needs. Good luck!

I'm sure the ace bandage idea would work for me to , but I get a panic attack just thinking about all that stuff on my face and head. Meaning the bandage and the head gear for the cpap. I thought the " cpap pro " sounded like a great deal , but I'm not buying anything that you can't return , especially at that price.

that's why I like the bandage, I don't get a claustrophobic feeling because it's so light (the regular stuff, NOT the self-adhesive kind that's sticky) Can't stand tape on my mouth for some reason, even though it's a smaller area that's taped. The bandage to me is pulled just tight enough to gently pull on my lips, so it feels ok. I tried the "Veronique" one that is this huge non-stretchy strap...HATED it...it was horrible LOL

Also ---Once I woke up all stuffed up and I couldn't breathe at all because I had a chin strap on. Can a person suffer from no air by holding the mouth closed or would they wake up ?I have PH and I'm not supposed to have any apnea situations, would this be the same , do you think ? It's a problem because air leaking ia a problem to ! I see my PH doctor the first of the month , I'll have to throw this at him. Maybe he will have me do another slep study because I wake up at least 3 times a night adjusting my nasal pillows..

It is good to see that someone else has found the combination of cpap, chin strap and dental device (to seal). It really works well for me. The snorban device is the best cheap device that I have found for the dental device.

GeneS, are you a distributor of Snorban? All of your posts are recommending it to people. That appears to be the sole purpose of your posts.
