Air Washers/Purifiers

Post by Fossy » Tue Dec 27, 2011 9:25 pm

So, i've had it up to here with the air quality (and smell) in my bedroom when i go to sleep and wake up and was wondering if anyone had any advice on what type of air washer/purifier i should consider getting?

Anyone have any experience with purchasing something like that? Perhaps some advice on what brand to get or avoid? ^^

Was looking at this list if that is any help - http://www.air-purifiers-america.com/lc ... Hero-top10

Thanks for any advice you can give in advance.

Numbers 5, 6, and 7 all use activated charcoal in their filtration. That is an excellent way to deal with odors.

Hi, I don't recommend getting a furnace unit; the Honeywell one I had installed died and now it just takes up precious space under the furnace.
I have two of these units in 1800 sq ft home, and am very pleased. Suggest you order online and also get a package of spare filters (they're HEPA with activated charcoal). see at: http://www.samsclub.com/sams/shop/produ ... tId=119568 It would, IMO be worth the $40 membership fee to get these.

Cheapie solution, put a box of aquarium charcoal (opened) under the bed;
or a half bag of plain grill charcoal (no hickory or mesquite--unless you like the smell).
This actually works--just not as fast; and nowhere near as expensive.

Fossy,
I've used a variety of air scrubbers. Maintenance and room capacity are what you need to look at. I highly recommend getting one that uses bulk activated charcoal so that you can always replenish it. I bought one that used cartridges and it was discontinued and I had difficulties finding them. With a bulk system, that can't occur.

We have a vents and it is great. You can add subtle scents if you are so inclined, but it is amazing what it picks up. We have an ionic breeze too, it picks up a lot of black dust as well.

What types of odors are you trying to eliminate?

I run two of these: http://www.amazon.com/3M-Filtrete-Ultra ... 000I4P4MW/ They are for particulates only, though.
