STOPPED breathing for over a minute in REM sleep
According to my sleep study, I have Obstructive REM sleep apnea.
The test noted that I had stopped breathing 20 times/ hr...up to 29 seconds in NREM sleep and up to 60.5 in REM sleep.....
OVER a minute....what does THAT do to someone?
Ironically now major cardiac episodes were noted in polysomic recording.....
I just want to know IF anybody else has similar stories or worse?

Your story is not unusual. 20 times an hour is considered MODERATE sleep apnia.

Re: STOPPED breathing for over a minute in REM sleep
The length of the apnea is mnost certainly an issue. The # of apneas is another issue, and as LSAT said, it looks like you have moderate sleep apnea. I believe I read somewhere in the forum where someone had up to 90 and 120 second apneas, and others who easily have over 100 events per hour. Pretty scary.
The good news is that youv'e been tested for it, you and your medical team know what's going on, and that you are being treated for it. What matters most from now on is that you never, ever, under any circumstance, give up therapy or intentionally sleep without your machine. Welcome to the club!

Thinking of quitting CPAP?
No problem, here's the first thing to do when you quit:
Advanced funeral planning. When you give up CPAP, you'll probably need it.

Re: STOPPED breathing for over a minute in REM sleep
During my initial sleep study, I had 108 events per hour with the longest apnea lasting 96 seconds. And all that with a normal sleep architecture

Re: STOPPED breathing for over a minute in REM sleep
I had over 100 events an hour and was told to never sleep at all, even a short nap, without the machine. Pretty scary feeling when they give you those numbers.
Re: STOPPED breathing for over a minute in REM sleep
That is high! And, while higher/more severe than mine and most likely others here, none of us are supposed to sleep or nap without our machines. Stopped breathing is stopped breathing. So hopefully this makes you feel less of an odd duck : )Puswart wrote:I had over 100 events an hour and was told to never sleep at all, even a short nap, without the machine. I had 42 events per hour. My concern is that my sleep specialist says that I must have had OSA for a long time for it to be that severe. What damage has been done to me.They say untreated OSA can take 20 years off your life. How many have I lost?
Re: STOPPED breathing for over a minute in REM sleep
I too was told to never nap or sleep without my machine as I may not wake up (ever).
I have severe apnea - 70/hr, longest stoppage of just over 30 seconds, the specialist figures I've had sleep apnea for at least 30 yrs or so and I'm only 47.
I'm getting my Auto machine (S9 Autoset) finally in a couple of weeks. I changed jobs and as such had no extended benefits until recently.
I believe nobody should nap or sleep without their machine period as starving ones body of much needed oxygen for any amount of time can not be good.

I was just recently tested over a 7 hour period. Stopped breathing 147 times - longest duration 117 seconds - just in 2 minutes.

I had an AHI of 96 during the first three hours of my split-night study. During that time, my sat O2 averaged 79% with a nadir of 61%.

Re: STOPPED breathing for over a minute in REM sleep
I rarely went into REM sleep, I think the longest I stayed in REM was 2mins. Might have to dig out my sleep studies and see what they said.
