Mask recommendations for sleeper who moves a lot
Hi everyone!
I move a lot in my sleep, which results in an average leak of 10 and 90% of 29 (these are ResMed numbers). These numbers probably aren't too bad, but I'd like to improve them.
I currently use the Swift II, but I find the mask and straps move too much especially when I sleep on my slide. I've tried the Swift FX too, but that mask has just never worked for me. Do you guys have any mask recommendations for me?
On a side note, my S9 has several mask settings -- pillows, nasal, nasal pillows, face. How does this setting affect my treatment? Does S9 blow out air differently depending on what type of mask I specify?
Thanks everyone and have a great weekend!

If your mask is comfortable I would keep it and not worry about the leaks. Your S9 will compensate. You don't mention what your AHI is with these leaks.

Your machine should be set to "pillows".chairmango wrote:On a side note, my S9 has several mask settings -- pillows, nasal, nasal pillows, face. How does this setting affect my treatment? Does S9 blow out air differently depending on what type of mask I specify?
I turn over alot and have had good luck with the Swift LT.
Have you tried putting velcro in the back strap of your FX?
Do you know if you might be mouth breathing?

Re: Mask recommendations for sleeper who moves a lot
Mask choice selection in the menu will not affect pressure at all. The selection impacts the leak report since ResMed subtracts a predetermined vent rate for each mask type before reporting the leak. Full face masks typically have a higher vent rate than nasal pillow masks. So having the wrong choice made could perhaps cause the leak reported to be slightly off but it doesn't affect pressure at all. Just the leak numbers.

Re: Mask recommendations for sleeper who moves a lot
Thank you guys for that valuable info!
Yeah, I've really wanted to try the Swift LT. The design looks really good. Unfortunately, I already gave away my Swift FX so can't try that again.
How do I find out if I'm mouth breathing? I don't think I am...
My AHI is always 1 to 2. That's pretty low, but I always find myself waking up several times (I can remember these wake-ups) in the middle of the night. My S9 numbers don't seem to reflect this. Could this be something not directly caused by sleep apnea? I have a SleepZeo, which seems to more accurately capture all my wake-ups and the time I spend awake each night (~40 minutes).

Re: Mask recommendations for sleeper who moves a lot
I believe the key for the active sleeper is not so much mask selection, but hose management.
I use a Swift FX, headband, and fishing rod to dangle the hose just above my head. It works very well.
See post viewtopic.php?f=1&t=53591&st=0&sk=t&sd=a
Hozer now sell a similar hose management system.

Hi chairmango
If the suggestions above do not work for you, I suggest you consider trying to keep your body less active at night.
These aids might, I repeat might, help -
http://www.the-pillow.com.au/general/ca ... illows.php
I use this to keep me on my side -
http://www.the-pillow.com.au/more/side_ ... r_more.php
and used to also use this, until I didn't need it any more -
http://www.the-pillow.com.au/more/posit ... w_more.php
more info on ideas at -

Note that my thigh wedge keeps me in a side-sleeping position, but does help my PLMD.
cheers

Re: Mask recommendations for sleeper who moves a lot
This is all super helpful and great info!
I currently use the 3M Cord Bundler clips above my bed to keep my hose from yanking on my mask. I got that idea through this forum.
The Side Sleeper side cushion looks great. I'll go ahead and order one from Amazon now!

Re: Mask recommendations for sleeper who moves a lot
I'm a side/stomach sleeper and move around a fair bit, but no where near as much as before CPAP therapy!
I use a Swift FX and Swift LT, and have just started taming my fabulous all-cloth SleepWeaver mask!
This is a mask I've wanted badly for a while and as soon as I was eligible for a new one, had my DME order a SleepWeaver. Much to my disappointment, there was no AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH on first wearing and it's taken a lot of experimenting and tweaking to get this right.
Firstly, my DME gave me a new mask, but it had the 'older' headgear - fortunately the company who makes SleepWeaver happily sent me new headgear - this made a HUGE difference! At least the leaks near my eyes stopped. I would get leaks soon after laying down and would revert back to the Swift mask. This happened a few nights.
SleepWeaver sent me a couple of documents for different ways of making the mask work - a lot of these suggestions were from other users. I tried them all and kinda came up with my own method from all of them. Still had a few issues with leakage below my nose.
Then I tried something I was doing with regular masks - avoided face moisturizer around my nose region. Hadn't considered this would be an issue with a cloth mask, but am now thinking it must be. Ever since the no moisturizer, I've been able to sleep with the mask on all night, with very few adjustments throughout the night.
Ok, long story on the SleepWeaver, but I was so determined to make this work because of the softness and comfort I wasn't giving up until there was nothing left to try. It is by far the most comfortable mask, and I woke up this morning thinking I'd taken it off during the night because it felt like nothing was on my face at all!
Cheers,
xena

I do, too.chairmango wrote:I move a lot in my sleep
Don't know whether it would work as well for you as it does for me, but the mask that has suited me wonderfully well for the past six years is Aeiomed's "Headrest" nasal pillows mask -- but only because I add an extra homemade strap across the front. And, have the main air hose hanging overhead as greg mentioned and as you say you already do.chairmango wrote:Do you guys have any mask recommendations for me?

With the extra strap (a leg cut off a pair of ladies' "tights") to steadily cradle the nasal pillows when I toss'n'turn, the mask is practically leakproof for me. Without the extra strap, I wouldn't be able to use it at all.
Using homemade straps -- useful for stablilizing masks other than just the one shown.

Rested Gal and XenaBlue - thanks for the mask recs! The HeadRest mask looks especially interesting to me. I might be giving it a try in the near future!
Re: Mask recommendations for sleeper who moves a lot
I agree with the Aeiomed Headrest recommendation and have been using that for years, loving it more than any mask I've ever used. Alas, I found out last week that the COMPANY IS GOING OUT OF BUSINESS and I can't get any more masks. They do wear out every 6 months or so, and now I'm searching for a replacement.
Has any lover of the Headrest mask found a similar mask that they love? I'm a side sleeper and toss and turn a lot too. That really was the perfect mask for me .
Thanks for any help. I've been using the Comfort LIte 2 and it's not bad, but still not the same.

Re: Mask recommendations for sleeper who moves a lot
cardinalfreak, the ComfortLite 2 came as close to being like the Headrest as any mask I've tried. Not as good as the Headrest, but pretty good.
I did chop off that bulky, useless swivel connector thingy on top of the ComfortLite 2 -- that made it better.
Pictures of getting rid of the swivel connector (and other modifications to that mask) are here:

Last I looked, there still seem to be quite a few Headrest masks still in stock at various online stores. I already had gotten myself a stash of them to last the rest of my life (since the Headrest nasal pillows seem to last literally for YEARS...heheh.)

Re: Mask recommendations for sleeper who moves a lot
My DME as late as Nov was able to send me the headrest as part of my quarterly replenishment. Try searching the on-line stores, there should [hopefully] be some residual stock left.Cardinalfreak wrote:Alas, I found out last week that the COMPANY IS GOING OUT OF BUSINESS and I can't get any more masks.

great info for you !
Fortunately i don't have to lab rat w/ the headrest. #1 favorite....
also helps if grass is sparse on top, rubber straps are hard on hair
still use the swift II w/ pad a cheek straps ,in the lazyboy
Like RG said, there are still headrests out there. no need to panic, it's just they last so long
Good Luck !
