OK......So......Here we go.....
Today I went to the DME and picked up my shiny new S9 Autoset, Quattro FX mask, and ClimateLine tubing. Now off to bed to see what questions I'll have for y'all.
By the way in my "training" I learned that everyone here is doing it wrong. The only settings us end-users need to worry about are the humidity setting and the ramp time.
Yeah....Right.

I'll be interested in hearing your experiences. I have the S9 autoset and H5i humidifier with the ClimateLine hose. Right now, I'm using the Liberty hybrid mask but I have a Quattro FX on the way. Good luck! It can take awhile to get used to CPAP, so don't be discouraged if the first few nights don't go perfect.

If you wake up in the middle of the night and find you have taken the mask off or that want to take the mask off, then take it off. But after a few minute break, put it back on and continue sleeping with it.
Good luck, I look forward to hearing about success!

Thinking of quitting CPAP?
No problem, here's the first thing to do when you quit:
Advanced funeral planning. When you give up CPAP, you'll probably need it.

Re: OK......So......Here we go.....
First night went well. When I did the titration test it was with a Quattro FX in size medium and I had a rather constant leakage around the lines in the corners of my mouth. Because of this we went with a large when I picked up everything yesterday but I'm not sure this was the right thing to do. With the large the bottom of the mask is pretty much at the point of my chin (it's a rather large chin - think Jay Leno). When I swallow or otherwise move my mouth it rides up and puts the top of the mask up between the eyes and starts it leaking. Of course then I have to sit up, pop off the mask, and re-seat. But I expect to have those sort of problems getting started and if I'm still bothered by it by the first of the week I'll switch to a medium. Also, when the mask is seated around the bridge of my nose the pressure pinches down my nasal passages and seriously clogs my sinuses. I may also end up playing with a hybrid mask.teknomom wrote:Good Luck! How was your first night? Teri
But overall a good first night with 8.7 hours use (I was reading for a while "masked up") and an AHI of 2.something.

Great to hear things went well on night 1. Hang in there with the FX, it's a tough mask to tame. Do a quick search here and you'll see lots of tips though.
I prefer the regular Quattro Mirage, as the forehead pad stabilizes the mask really well, but LOTS of folks here have tamed the FX and use it without leaks =)

It's probably best to go ahead and get out of bed if you have to take a break from the mask. Otherwise, you may get in the habit of taking it off, falling asleep, and not remembering doing it in the morning.ameriken wrote:If you wake up in the middle of the night and find you have taken the mask off or that want to take the mask off, then take it off. That's what I did last night. Took it off then walked to the kitchen to get a drink then back to it..archangle wrote:It's probably best to go ahead and get out of bed if you have to take a break from the mask. Re: OK......So......Here we go.....
Night two was not as smooth. I'm a side sleeper and just couldn't find a sweet spot of comfort and not pushing the mask out of place although the machine showed the little green smiley face for mask fit this morning. As I mentioned before, when I feel the need to take off the mask for a bit I got out of bed and took a little walk. That happened three or four times last night not to mention a few times of just sitting on the edge of the bed to remove and replace. I think I"m going to look into one of those CPAP pillows with the cut-outs on the edge. Anyone have a favorite? I'm partial to memory foam if that makes a difference.
Because of the side sleep/comfort thing I ended up trying to sleep on my back, something that I trained myself a long time ago to stop doing because of the snoring thing. While I'm not sure I ever fell completely asleep I was kind of cool to notice that the Autoset recognized the difference in breathing and kicked up the pressure. Don't remember what the machine said my AHI was but it was double digits. At this point I'm more focused on comfort than numbers.
Also, the machine, I think it's the humidifier, makes a strange noise when I exhale. It's really hard to describe but in my sleep I think it's singing to me. The humidifier also makes random clicking noises. I remember seeing other thread about humidifier noise so I'll go back to read those.
Sorry to turn this thread into a "Dear Diary" kind of thing but I know most of the people on this board are here to help and I'm hoping my comments will help other newbies.
Thanks again for everyone's support,
Randy

Randy, please don't think that you are "bothering" us when you ask questions.....how else are you going to get it right... that's what we are here for. We believe in the "pay it forward" philosophy, and stay here to help others as we have been helped. Don't for a second think that we got by without asking questions when we first started. If it wasn't for the wonderful folks here, I would have never made it to where I am today............having great sleep and feeling soooo much better. Welcome to the forum and good luck with your therapy.
Cheers
Nan
