Loved the humidifier, but got rained on! Help!

Post by apneaicinisrael » Mon Mar 06, 2006 12:12 am

Dear Forum,

After a bit of a problem the night before, I got my new (on loan from the DME) humidifier going last night and happily went to bed with my PB 240 and its heated humidifier and Breeze pillows. I slept really well!!! Until 4 am when it started dripping up my nose and down my neck. Being a well educated though new xPAP user, I new what was happening. However, it wasn't pleasant and I finally turned off the whole system and slept without for the remainder of the night.

My first conclusion from the 6 hours I did sleep with the humidifier last night was: I like it! It helps! I slept really well!!!!!

Now, I know some things I need to do for the future. I need to get a sleeve for the tubing, and maybe I will eventually order the Aussie Heated Hose. BUT, what can I do for TONIGHT

Please recommend how to improvise some insulation for the hose, and also, should I turn the setting on the humidifier UP or DOWN? I only had it on "2" last night, and it goes up to 5. I had it on a box below the level of my bed, but not on the cold floor. And I keep a portable heater nearby on a low setting all night.

THANKS

AII

I've been using a heated humidifier for over a year now and only had a rainout a couple of times.

Typically, I run mine on 4 (out of the same 1-5 choices). I started off at 2 and it just didn't put enough moisture in the air. I don't have a sleeve or a heated hose, instead, I pull the hose under the covers with me and my body heat keeps the hose warm. It takes a little getting used to, but hey, so did having a mask strapped to my head all night and trying to breathe in a hurricane!

I have a friend that has been having this same problem. His solution was to move the whole unit to just above his bed level on the headboard. I know that most people say to keep it just below the level of the bed but moving it beautifully for him and he has had no more rainout since the move. So maybe if you just try putting it up, just slightly above, the bed level this will help until you get the hose situation fixed.

For tonight - you can go to Home Depot or Lowes (maybe even Walmart) and get the foam insulation to winterize pipes. The foam has a slit in it. You can put it on most of your hose.

Or, you can roll it into a bathtowel and secure it with tie-ties, rubber bands, string, etc. That should get you by until you get the hose insulated.

If you can afford the Aussie heated hose, go for it. If not, you can make yourself a "couple" of hose covers. One sometimes doesn't do it.

I have 3 covers on my aussie and still get a few droplets in my Aura, and only have my humidifier setting on 1.

How does one change the humidifier setting for a Respironics humidifier and is a setting of 1 high or low?

Thanks

Liz,
1 is a low setting. Mine goes up to 5 and I keep it on 2.
To adjust the setting, depress the humidity button and hold it until the number it is currently set at displays. Then push either that button or the one directly below it to go up or down for your desired setting. Let me know how it goes for you. You have certainly found the right forum for help and answers to any questions you may have. Wishing you good sleep and success in this new way of sleeping.

I didn't know if you would see this answer in the forum or not so I also sent you a PM.

I hung a small towel on the wall to keep the hose from touching the stone directly.
Wrapped the part of my hose that touches the wall in a scarf
Wrapped the Breeze's short hose in a knee sock
And have my humidifier at about 2.

All this, with a heated hose.

And yes, you can have it delivered from Australia to Israel - comes by registered post, and you don't even pay customs on it.

I believe that rainout is a bigger problem for those of us whose pressure is very low (mine usually hovers at 5.5).

I am using the Swift and I keep my HH on 4.

I route the hose down under the covers and sleep as much of the hose under the covers and keep the unit 3in off the floor.

The Swiftcylinder is the highest point so hopefully any rainout will drain.

Good Luck,

Tom

Wow, that's a good point Ozij, I never thought of that. It bugs me that some have wonderful success with the heated hose and have no rainout. While, others of us have 3 covers and still get rainout. THE HIGH PRESSURES MUST PREVENT THE CONDENSATION FROM FORMING - OR IT DRIES IT OUT BEFORE IT REACHES THE FACE.

My pressure is 7 or 8, I live in the South, and I get heated hose rainout with the Aura.

What about you others?

I'm a newbie..but I find if I pull hte hose over the head of the bed it does not carry the drips...the machine is about level with the bed which probably raises the elevation high enough to help..

Tom, I never had rainout with the standard hose when it was under the covers with me either.

But when I switched to the Aura (over the head), then I started getting rainout. I think it's mainly a problem with the Aura, Swift, and Breeze because they all are over-the-head interfaces.

Anyway, that's my theory.

heated hose

Post by sleepyred » Mon Mar 06, 2006 3:53 pm

I'm going to try my heated hose (came today!) tonight.
I use a breeze and have mine set on 1 1/2 w/out rainout, but I need more humidity so I'm going to up it to 4 like I do with my mirage. I got rain out with that, but I guess having a nasal mask dispersed the rainout over a larger part.

I tried to sleep with my hose in my covers, but kept pulling my mask and making leaks.

I am so frustrated with this humidifier thing. Two nights in a row - rain. Last night I wrapped the long hose in a 6 foot polarfleece scarf. Only the small hose of the Breeze was out in the open. Started the night on low setting of 1, then when I started getting moisture tried a higher setting, finally at 2 a.m. I gave up. I detached the humidifier but I couldn't even use my Breeze as it was so full of water - it gurgled. So once again I slept without - and woke with cotton in my brain and a dull headache. OK, so it has convinced me over and again that I really and truly feel better on the CPAP, but I would like to be able to use the humidifier, too!

O., your comment about the pressure may hit on the issue. My pressure is set at a stable 5. This is a good setting for me. Wonder if others on low pressure setting have also had difficulty solving the rainout problem. Anyone?

Bye for now,
a tired, but determined

AII,
Try your humidifier on half, for the whole night.

If that's OK, try 1 the next night. Don't try raising the heat in the middle of thenight, that won't help.

And don't leave the narrow hose without a cover....

Aussie Heated Hose!

Post by sleepyred » Tue Mar 07, 2006 5:13 am

I'm about to post a new topic about my new heated hose.

I got it, plugged it in, raised my humidity level from 1 to 3 1/2 (Where I like it) and NO RAINOUT! I did not even use my snuggle over it.

I am impressed! It was worth every penny!

I even have a cold and was still able to breathe through my nose.

Best investment for my cpap to date!
